Tamil Nadu begin Ranji Trophy pre-season camp with major overhaul ahead of 2026-27 season

Tamil Nadu will open their pre-season Ranji Trophy camp in Chennai on September 3, 2026, as the state association launches a broad overhaul ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. Selectors have named 39 players for the camp, comprising a 30-member probables group and nine additional players drawn largely from the fast-bowling ranks.

The camp follows a difficult 2025-26 campaign in which Tamil Nadu finished sixth among eight teams in their group. V. Yo Mahesh has been appointed head coach for the new season, replacing M. Senthilnathan and M. Venkataramana, who shared the role in 2025-26. His appointment was confirmed on June 24, 2026.

"He will be assisting the selectors and coaches and be involved in talent scouting and ensure the academy is run in the best way," said TNCA president T. J. Srinivasa Raj.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is also in the process of filling a newly created Head of Cricket position that will oversee all state teams.

"From this year, we plan to have monthly review meetings with team coaches, academy coaches and the Strength & Conditioning staff to keep a track on the progress of teams and players," said Srinivasa.

What structural changes is TNCA putting in place for 2026-27?

Alongside the coaching reshuffle, TNCA is restoring a model it previously used at its academy, under which six to seven coaches hold permanent positions while a separate group of coaches joins on short-term assignments to support specific camps across age-group and senior teams. The incoming Head of Cricket will coordinate these arrangements once appointed.

"We are also in the process of reviving an old practice of having six to seven permanent coaches at the TNCA Academy. Apart from these permanent coaches, we will have a handful of coaches on short-term assignments who can assist during camps for the various teams," said Srinivasa.

The Head of Cricket role will involve working alongside selectors and coaches, leading talent identification and ensuring the academy functions effectively.

What does the camp schedule and fixture list look like?

Training sessions during the camp will begin around 8 a.m., earlier than the usual start time, so that batters can face deliveries while there is still moisture in the surface. The MAC Stadium curator is preparing pitches with grass and bounce to replicate the conditions Tamil Nadu are likely to encounter on away trips. A four-day practice match at MAC Stadium is scheduled for later in September 2026.

Tamil Nadu will also travel to Ahmedabad for pre-season fixtures before their opening Ranji Trophy match against Rajasthan, which begins on October 11, 2026, in Jaipur. MAC Stadium will then stage Tamil Nadu's first home games of the season, against Uttarakhand and Railways in October 2026. Those fixtures will mark the first time Chepauk has hosted a Ranji Trophy match in two years, since Tamil Nadu faced Karnataka there in February 2024.

"We will also start earlier than usual around 8 a.m., so batters can play when there is a bit of moisture on the pitch. Though we can’t get identical conditions to what we will get up north, we will try our best to simulate it here," said Srinivasa.
