The ongoing mega cricket showdown T20 World Cup 2024 has been the centre of debate due to various incidents and upsets which have kept both the fans and cricket experts on their toes. During the game between Afghanistan (AFG) and Bangladesh (BAN), a bizarre incident in the 12th over of the Bangla Tigers' run-chase sparked controversy and accusations from certain quarters of strategic manipulation and ethical breach. For the unversed, this particular involved Gulbadin Naib, who seemingly had suffered cramps while being stationed at first slip.

Notably, the incident took place after head coach, Jonathan Trott, signalled the team to slow down the game upon learning that Afghanistan were marginally ahead of the DLS par score, with the rain gods having begun to unleash their fury at the start of the over, which was to be bowled by Noor Ahmad.

Following the incident, there was a cascade of reactions, with many individuals finding humour in it despite its questionable nature. One notable respondent was Indian cricketer, Ravichandran Ashwin, who promptly engaged on social media, prodding a humorous exchange with the Afghan all-rounder within hours of the happening. However, the criticism intensified when Gulbadin returned to the field one over after the match resumed following the third rain interruption and claimed a wicket.

Subsequently exhibited exuberant celebrations as Afghanistan advanced to the semi-finals for the first time in an ICC tournament. Amidst the criticism and demands for the ICC against the all-rounder, Ashwin came forward in support of Gulbadin. He asserted that the player's actions were driven by an ardent desire to secure victory in the pivotal match for his nation and to qualify for the semi-finals. Moreover, Gulbadin's determination reflected a willingness to do whatever it took to propel his team to success.

"Gulbadin Naib fell that way. Everyone said that is a penalisable offence. But what the hell, man? The guy is playing for his country, trying to win a World Cup, qualify," said Ashwin in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

It is a country with so much hope, they are playing for one another: Ashwin

Furthermore, the ace India off-spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin redirected attention to the passion and fervour ingrained within the Afghan players. He highlighted that the Afghans were driven by unwavering hope and mutual support to push themselves to the limit for their team. Besides, Ashwin also remarked that while he had witnessed numerous instances where teams played for their emblem, country, or comrades, the tenacity with which Afghanistan battled to the end and secured victory was unparalleled.

"In Afghanistan, it is not just momentum. It is a country with so much hope. They are playing for one another. This playing for one another, we can say a thousand things about it. We can say it to so many people. Doesn't India play for one another? For the badge? Of course. But Afghanistan, at this stage of their cricketing journey, are playing for one another like I have never seen before," Ashwin concluded.
