India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivered an impressive spell on the morning of Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s, dismissing England captain Ben Stokes in the third over of the day. After Day 1 was dominated by England batters, Bumrah brought the visitors back into the contest, giving the team much much-needed breakthrough.

After opting to bat first, Joe Root remained unbeaten on 99 at stumps on the opening day. Root stitched crucial stands first with Ollie Pope (109 runs) and then with Ben Stokes (79* by close) as England managed 271/5 at the end of the opening day.

India’s seamers had little to be proud of on Day 1. While Nitish Reddy’s spell saw him remove both openers in his first over, Bumrah picked an important wicket late in the day, removing Harry Brook with a nip-backer that crashed into the off stump.

Bumrah removed the England captain Ben Stokes in the third over of the morning. Bumrah went around the wicket and angled a good-length ball in. The delivery, which remained low, went past Stokes’ defence, with the off-stump flying. Stokes, who had battled to 44 off 110 balls, looked in disbelief.

Bumrah removes Root, Woakes in same over

In his very next over, Bumrah got better off the well-set Root. Resuming on 99*, Root reached his 37th Test century but couldn’t capitalize on it. The right-arm pacer produced a fuller delivery just outside off, with Root misjudging the delivery and getting an inside edge onto the stumps.

The batter's middle stump was sent cartwheeling, and Root fell for 104, making it his 11th dismissal by Bumrah in Tests, equalling Pat Cummins for the most times a bowler has dismissed Root in the format. In the very next delivery, he dismissed Chris Woakes for a golden duck, caught behind off a faint edge confirmed by UltraEdge after a smart review. England, who began the day hoping to go past 350, suddenly looked on the verge of being bowled out for under 300.
