The Chepauk Super Gillies opener K Aashiq’s bat broke mid-shot and went flying towards the bowler during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 clash between CSG and Nellai Royal Kings at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore on June 9.

The incident occurred during the powerplay when right-arm pacer Emmanuel Cherian bowled a length delivery to Aashiq. The left-handed batter attempted a shot towards long-on, but the impact of the ball caused the bat to split. A part of the bat flew off in the direction of the bowler, narrowly missing him. The ball went towards extra cover, where it was picked by Arun Karthik.

Nellai Royal Kings won the toss and chose to bowl first. Chepauk Super Gillies had an early setback with opener RS Mokit Hariharan falling cheaply. But, Aashiq and skipper Baba Aparajith steadied the innings with a crucial 83-run partnership for the second wicket. Aparajith played a fluent knock, scoring 41 off 29 balls before falling to the bowling of Sachin Rathi.

After Aparajith's dismissal, Aashiq built a 33-run stand with Vijay Shankar. Aashiq eventually departed after a well-made 54. The finishing touches to the innings were provided by Shankar and Swapnil Singh, who put on a blistering 56-run partnership in just 19 balls. Swapnil was aggressive, smashing 45 off just 14 balls at a strike rate of 321.43, while Shankar remained unbeaten on 47 off 24.

Chepauk Super Gillies posted a total of 212 in their 20 overs. For Nellai Royal Kings, Sonu Yadav delivered a disciplined spell, taking two wickets in his four-over spell, while V Yudheeswaran impressed with three wickets from his three overs.

Nellai Royal Kings need to chase 213 to secure two points and climb to the top of the table. Chepauk Super Gillies are at the top with two points with a better Net Run Rate than other teams.
