The 15th edition of the Asia Cup is done and dusted and its Sri Lanka, who emerged victorious in the final as they defeated Pakistan by a 23-run margin in Dubai. Bhanuka Rajakasa and Wanindu Hasaranga were the star performers for the Island nation as both played a vital part for their side in the summit clash. The former made an unbeaten 71 off 45 while leggie Hasaranga took 3/27 including the crucial scalp of Mohammad Rizwan. With this, the spirited Lankan Lions, led superbly by Dasun Shanaka lifted their sixth Asia Cup trophy in the history of the tournament.

Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start in the campaign as they lost their opening fixture to Afghanistan by eight wickets. Shanaka’s team got bundled out for just 105 batting first and was almost written off by many for the title. But then came a comeback with Sri Lanka winning four matches on the bounce, all while chasing including a solid victory against the tournament favorites India. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, barring the final, were in great touch throughout the competition.

Rajapaksa’s cameos in games before the final and skipper Shanaka’s blitz lower down the order helped their side in reaching the ultimate final eventually lifting the elusive trophy. Pacer Dilshan Madushanka looked promising while another seam bowler Pramod Madushan, who made his debut in the tournament and played just his second T20I in the final, registered figures of 4/34 in the title-winning encounter.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in their second consecutive Asia Cup final after 2014. The Men in Green lost the grand final to the same opponents eight years back in Mirpur, Bangladesh. Batting first, Pakistan posted 260/5 courtesy of an unbeaten century from Fawad Alam and fifties from captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal. Lasith Malinga took figures of 5/56 as he restricted the opposition under a total of 265. Lahiru Thirimanne struck a ton while Mahela Jayawardene made 75 to seal their fifth Asia Cup title then. History repeated as Pakistan came second best again against Sri Lanka in 2022 to hand them their sixth title.

Virat Kohli’s long-awaited 71st international century, which came after a duration of 1021 days, was the highlight of this Asia Cup as the star batter struck form in style by smashing an unbeaten 122* against Afghanistan. For the runners-up Pakistan, Mohamad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, and Naseem Shah were the positives in the tournament along with the ever-reliable and consistent T20 batter Mohammad Rizwan. The Asia Cup 2022 competition witnessed some memorable and exhilarating encounters that cricket fans all around the world enjoyed every bit.
