One of Zimbabwe’s successful all-rounder and Elton Chigumbura quit as the captain of Zimbabwe. The 29-Year old from Zimbabwe has announced stepping down from the post after drawing the 4 match T20 Series against Bangladesh with a brilliant 18 run victory. Chigumbura felt this was the right time for somebody else to take over as the captain. “I have enjoyed the challenges that came with leading the team,” he said after he announced his second stint of captaincy’s end. He also added, “Now I feel it’s the best time to leave it to the next guy to lead us so I can focus on my game as a player. I am sure I will lead from the front as a senior player as I still believe I have more years of playing in me and of winning games for the team.” He is set to be replaced by the veteran Hamilton Masakadza who recently won the player of the series in the recently concluded series. Chigumbura’s first tenure had ended in June 2011 when he was replaced by Brendan Taylor. He then took over the captaincy in mid-2014 when captaincy was split and Taylor became only the Test captain and Chigumbura was handed the reins for the limited overs squads. He was heavily criticized after the series loss at home against Afghanistan in 2014-15. This announcement has coincided with the announcement of Brendan Taylor’s probable return to the squad after his contract terminates with Nottinghamshire. Taylor had quit international cricket following last year’s World Cup to take up a three-year deal with Nottinghamshire. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Marvan Atapattu and temporary batting consultant for Zimbabwe said, “I will be here with these guys till the end of this series and try to work with Dav Whatmore, whom I know for years and help them tactically and technically in the coming days.” Chigumbura has captained the African side in 80 limited-overs matches, winning 20 of them. He was also leading the team in their historic wins when they upset Australia and New Zealand at home. Zimbabwe’s next tour is likely to be a short limited-overs tour of West Indies in February ahead of the World T20 in India. “We wish him the best with both bat and ball in his continued service to the game,” said ZC managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa.
