The Lanka Premier League (LPL) returns to the calendar after a year's absence when the Jaffna Kings take on the Galle Gallants in the opening match of the 2026 season on Friday, July 17, at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Both sides will be looking to open the new season with a win to have the upper hand over other sides during the early stages of the tournament.

The Jaffna Kings are LPL's most successful team, having won four titles in five seasons. They defeated the Galle-based franchise during the 2024 final to win their most recent title after South Africa's Rilee Rossouw scored an unbeaten century in the showpiece match two years ago. 

Galle Gallants, who have had quite a few name changes in their history, have reached three finals but have ended up on the losing side on all occasions. The side led by Dasun Shanaka will be looking to finally break their duck and get their hands on the elusive trophy this time around.
