From the cricketing front, 2018 hasn’t give batsman Gautam Gambhir many chances to celebrate. He resigned as the captain of the Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the IPL after moving from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a franchise which tasted a couple of titles under his leadership in 2012 and 2014 respectively. To add insult to injury, he didn’t play a single match for the Daredevils thereafter.

Nevertheless, the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy has given him plenty of reasons to cheer. He is playing for Delhi and captained his team to the quarterfinals of the 50-overs event. Even with the willow, he has been impressive as he scored 151 against Kerala to register his maiden century. In the ongoing match against Haryana, the Delhi-born cricketer was expected to be at his very best.

Gambhir in full flow in Bangalore

Moreover, today also happens to be his 37th birthday and the seasoned campaigner had the chance of making the occasion count. He did it with sheer grace by notching a 69-ball century in Bangalore. Delhi were chasing 230 runs in the knockout encounter and the 37-year-old Gambhir came to the party by taking the opposition bowling by the scruff of the neck right from the word go.

His opening stand of 54 runs from six overs along with U19 World Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand set the tone for the run chase. However, Gambhir carried on his own merry way and put on 118 runs along with Dhruv Shorey. He nudged Jayant Yadav on the leg-side to accomplish the ton, which happened to be his 21st in List A cricket to go with 60 half-centuries.

Nevertheless, he couldn’t carry on thereafter as leg-break bowler Rahul Tewatia got rid of him. Wicketkeeper Nitin Saini stumped him, taking off the bails in a flash. The veteran ended with 104 runs from 72 balls with the help of 16 boundaries. In the meantime, Twitter was ecstatic after Gambhir’s masterclass at M Chinnaswamy Stadium and subsequently, the supporters hailed him.
