Gautam Gambhir thanks Afridi and Akhtar for their gestures towards Amritsar tragedy victims

He also hoped for the Indian people to take both cricketers' words on a positive note.

19 October 2018, a day when India were immersed in the ecstasy of Dussehra, Amritsar had nothing, but grief and sorrow to encounter after 61 people were killed in a train accident. During an event in Dhobi Ghat, a train mowed them and to add insult to injury, at least 143 were found injured. After the tragic occurring, condolences poured in from across the globe.

The cricketing fraternity also condemned the incident. Former Pakistani cricketers like Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi, who are active participants in the social media platforms, sent heartwarming messages for the sufferers. The gestures have undoubtedly delighted Delhi-born cricketer Gautam Gambhir and he lauded his Pakistani counterparts.

A pleased Gambhir  

The left-handed batsman, who recently turned 37 during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, said that despite having a sour relationship with Afridi, he can’t overlook the retired cricketer’s gestures. Moreover, Gambhir expressed his gratitude towards Rawalpindi Express Akhtar. He also hoped for the Indian people to take both cricketers’ words on a positive note.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “While there may be history between me and @SAfridiOfficial but i really appreciate his gesture of expressing grief for d families of Amritsar train accident victims. Am sure everyone in India welcomes such gestures. A big thanks to @shoaib100mph too for his condolences,”

The southpaw had an incredible campaign in the 50-overs event. He not only led Delhi to the final of the tournament but also ended as the second highest run scorer with 518 runs from 10 matches at an average of 51.80.

Moreover, Gambhir notched a couple of centuries one of which came against Haryana in the quarterfinal in Bangalore. His top score of 151 retired out came against Kerala in Delhi. He is next set to play the upcoming Ranji Trophy, which starts later this year.
