India dominated yet another team in the 2019 World Cup with Sri Lanka facing their wrath at the Headingley in Leeds. Virat Kohli’s men scripted a thunderous seven-wicket victory with 39 deliveries to spare. The triumph took them to the top of the points table. But their opponent in the semis would only be decided after the last league encounter between South Africa and Australia at the Old Trafford.

Lanka’s decision to bat first backfired miserably on them as Jasprit Bumrah didn’t allow any loosener whatsoever. The speedster got rid of both the openers – Dimuth Karunaratne (10) and Kusal Perera (18). Ravindra Jadeja, playing his first match of the mega event, spun one past the bat to get Kusal Mendis (3) stumped. Avishka Fernando (20) promised with four boundaries and then fell prey to Hardik Pandya.

The onus was on the experienced Angelo Mathews (113) and Lahiru Thirimanne (53) to resurrect the Islanders’ inning. The duo stitched together a stand of 124 runs. After Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Thirimanne, Dhananjaya de Silva (29) carried on the good work with Mathews, who got to his third ODI ton in 115 balls. Bumrah was India’s standout bowler with three wickets and Lanka ended with 264/7.

Rohit and Rahul torment Lanka

Chasing a moderate target, the Indian openers – KL Rahul (111) and Rohit Sharma (103) – looked at ease. They played Lasith Malinga without much fuss and fizzled out the spirit from the Lankan attack. Their stand went from strength to strength and eventually amassed 189 runs. Rohit went on to become the first batsman with as many as five tons in a single World Cup edition and he got to the milestone in 92 balls.

Kasun Rajitha got rid of the 32-year-old, but by then India was in a commanding position. Thereafter, it was the turn of Rahul to notch his second ODI ton off 109 balls. The youngster has been getting a lot of starts off late and the ton would’ve given him a lot of confidence. Malinga got rid of him with the Men in Blue needing 20 runs. Virat Kohli (34) played a handy knock to see his team over the finishing line.
