Joe Root is still confident of continuing as England’s Test captain despite a disastrous Ashes campaign. A lot of questions have been raised over Root’s leadership after the Test series loss to Australia. It has to be noted that the England side was thrashed on Australian soil with a 4-0 win for the hosts. The batting has not clicked for the England side since the home series against India and they are trailing at the bottom of the World Test Championship table with a lot of work to be done.

One of the main areas for England’s woes has been their openers who have failed continuously. The visitors stuck with Haseeb Hameed for four Tests but he couldn’t get going and finally was left out for the fifth Test while Zak Crawley has shown signs of getting his form back. England has not managed to win a Test in Australia since 2013 which is huge and Root has mentioned making big changes moving forward.

I’ve got the support – Joe Root

Root was quite convinced that he can still have an impact on his captaincy and was delighted to have the support from the teammates despite the losses. He added that his experience will certainly work in the favour of the team and aspires to take the team in the right direction. Root had earlier suggested changes in the structure of domestic cricket in England which has been prone to low scoring games.

“I feel like I’m the right man for the job,”. “I’ve got the appetite, I feel passionately about it, I think I’ve got the support of the guys around me. I’m very experienced in the role now. Hopefully, that’s what happens moving forward but it’s another step forward that needs to happen.” Root told after the fifth Test as quoted by Evening Standard

There have been suggestions of Ben Stokes taking up the captaincy as it he is always a fighter and likes to take responsibility. Mark Wood’s quickfire spells and Jonny Bairstow’s fighting knocks remain the positives from the series while there are a lot of changes expected.
