The form Joe Root is in at the moment, the bowlers need something special to get rid of the England skipper. The right-handed batsman has started 2021 with a bang. In his first two Tests of the year which were against Sri Lanka, he notched up scores of 228 and 186. The huge knocks from the captain helped England clean sweep the two-match series against the Island nation.

And Root has started in the same manner in the ongoing series against India. In the first innings of the ongoing first Test in Chennai, Root played a stunning knock of 218 as England rode on their skipper’s knock to pile up a mammoth total of 578 runs. And Root was looking set to pile more misery on India in the second innings on Monday.

After England bowled out India for 337 to take a big lead of 241 runs, Root started well with the bat again. He was looking to score some quick runs and had already raced away to 40 off just 31 balls with the help of 7 fours before being undone by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. India needed something special from their pace spearhead to dismiss the England star and Bumrah did exactly that.

The pacer was also supported by the uneven bounce in the track as Root was trapped in front. The delivery from Bumrah was angled in and Root’s task was made tougher by the low bounce. In the end, he failed to make any contact with the ball and was rapped on the back pad in front of off-stump. The England batting mainstay did not even bother to review as he walked off the field.

Here is a clip of Joe Root’s dismissal:

England on top

Talking about the game, England are still on top in the series-opener. Starting the day on 257 for 6, India were all out for 337, handing the visitors a huge lead of 241 runs. The lead could have been much bigger if not for Washington Sundar’s unbeaten knock of 85. India fell 42 runs short of avoiding the follow on but England decided against making the home side bat again.

The tourists have started on a shaky note and were reeling on 119 for 5 at the time of compiling this report. However, they have already extended their overall lead to 360 runs and are well in command of the proceedings.
