India continued their dominance over South Africa as Virat Kohli smashed his highest Test score of an unbeaten 254. The overnight pair of Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane put on a 178-run stand for the 4th wicket before the latter got out in the 2nd session.

From there, it was all about Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo looked to score quick runs towards the Tea interval. They put on 225 for the 5th wicket before Jadeja got out in the 90s and India declared their innings at 601/5. The Indian pacers got the rewards in the last hour of the 2nd day’s play as the visitors were reduced to 36/3.

All the statistical highlights from yet another day of Test cricket that witnessed India’s dominance:

A record knock from Kohli:

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score 250+ runs in a Test inning. In the process, he broke his own record of highest Test score by an Indian captain. He scored 243 during the first innings of the 2017 Delhi Test against Sri Lanka.

Kohli-Rahane’s partnership makes a mark:

10 – Number of century partnerships between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in Test cricket; the joint 2nd most century stands by a pair for 4th and lower wicket. The Pakistan pair of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan had 15 such partnerships to their name


19 – The Kohli-Rahane duo now have as many as 19 fifty-plus partnerships for 4th wicket in Test cricket; the most by an Indian pair for 4th wicket surpassing 18 by Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar pair.


3122 – Partnership runs between Virat and Ajinkya pair for 4th or lower wicket in Test cricket. Only Ganguly-Sachin (3468) has more partnership runs for India than Kohli-Rahane for 4th or lower wicket.


The quick-fire stand:

5.74 – Run-rate of the partnership between Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja; the highest during any double century Test stand for India. The duo added 225 runs for the 5th wicket from only 235 deliveries.

The previous highest RR was 5.64 during the 221-run opening stand between Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay in the 2009 Brabourne Test against Sri Lanka.


Milestones for Kohli:

138 – Virat completed 7000 runs in Test cricket when he scored his 200th run of the innings. He needed 138 innings to reach the milestone; 3rd fastest among Indians. Overall, only three players scored 7000+ Test runs in less than 138 innings.

435 – Kohli needed only 435 innings to complete 21000 runs in International cricket; the fewest by any player. Sachin Tendulkar was the previous quickest taking 473 innings.

Maharaj @ 100:

100 – Keshav Maharaj became only the 5th South African spinner to claim 100 wickets in Test cricket. He needed 27 Tests for the milestone, 2nd fastest SA spinner after Hugh Tayfield (22).


Tough game for Maharaj:

1/196 – Keshav Maharaj conceded as many as 196 runs in India’s first innings. These are the 3rd most number of runs conceded by a South Africa bowler in a Test inning. Nicky Boje was taken for 0/221 by Sri Lanka in the 2006 Colombo Test while Paul Harris gave away 3/203 against India in 2008.
