IPL 2016: Top 5 fielders of the tournament

When they say catches win matches. They are not wrong. But, that is not what good fielding is all about. Good fielding sees how many runs are saved and the commitment that is generally shown. It is an all-around effort and something that has been evident in the IPL 2016. The fielding has also had an injection of ‘youthful exuberance’ apart from the all-round improvement in the fielding in the recently concluded edition of the IPL. Here is a list of the top 5 fielders in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League. 1. AB de Villiers – 19 catches: AB de Villiers. (Photo Source: BCCI) AB de Villiers is one of the best fielders in the world. He does not run at the speed of light to stop the ball going to the fence. Instead, he glides across the blades of grass to stop the ball from reaching the fence. In addition, he does it at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a cricketing venue that has the reputation as being one of the smallest stadiums in the country. He has failed to shine with either the bat or the ball. Despite all that, Henriques has been called up for Australia’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. However, the 29-year old’s catching and fielding have been nothing short of world class. He has 11 catches to his name and is at second place on the top catches tally. 3. David Miller – 10 catches: David Miller. (Photo Source: BCCI) The Kings XI Punjab have had a disappointing season, David Millier who was the skipper of the team to start with couldn’t impress with his batting and captaincy and ended up conceding the leadership to Murali Vijay. Despite all that Miller was a standout performer in the field. He has the third highest tally of catches this tournament with 10 catches from 14 matches he has featured in. Morris had been excellent in all departments of the game but couldn’t push his team into the playoffs. He smashes the maximums, bowls the ball at terrifying speeds, and in addition, takes the catches that come his way. His height also enables him to stretch far enough to stop the ball from crossing the fence for either a four of a six. Apart from the massive number of runs and wickets to his name, Morris also boasts of 8 catches, underlining his fielding abilities. 5. Suresh Raina – 7 catches: Suresh Raina. (Photo Source: BCCI) Suresh Raina has been considered as one of the best fielders in Indian cricket for almost a decade. With the Gujarat Lions arising from the ashes of the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, Raina’s fielding hasn’t changed one bit. Apart from throwing himself in the covers at almost everything that has come his way, he has seven catches to his name.
