IPL 2019: 10 Expensive players who might be released ahead of the next season

Indian Premier League (IPL) has just been wonderful to watch this season. We all have witnessed some mind-blowing games with clinching finishes and dramatic events. IPL is the biggest tournament in the world beating all the other leagues like BBL, CPL, PSL and much more. Many have become great players with the help of the IPL, whereas some have lost their value due to their performances in it. This year’s extravaganza is coming to an end with just two matches left. Qualifier two will be played between the experienced Chennai Super Kings and the youthful Delhi Capitals. Both the teams are strong contenders to win the title. Mumbai Indians are the team safely sitting in the finals, waiting for their rightful opponent. Whoever it may be, the final is always a huge occasion and the players will be anxious on how to go about the innings. After the end of the season, the IPL franchises will be planning and taking notes on whom all to retain and the players who should be released in the next year’s IPL. Some teams will also release a couple of their players and buy them back for a lesser amount, just like how Rajasthan did with Jaydev Unadkat. Here we bring you 10 expensive players who might get released ahead of the next season: 1. Jaydev Unadkat (Rajasthan Royals) Jaydev Unadkat. (Photo: IANS) The Saurashtra player has disappointed the Rajasthan camp once again. He was picked up for a whopping Rs 11.5 crore in the 2018 IPL season. After having a disappointing year, RR released him and bought back for a lesser amount of Rs 8.4 crores, which ended up being a poor move for them. This season, Jaydev Unadkat picked up only 10 wickets conceding runs at a hefty economy of 10.66. He once again failed to justify the price tag and despite the Royals management trusting him continuously in the death overs to deliver, Unadkat disappointed. Though he earned a Man of the Match for his bowling at the fag end of the league stage, one would expect the left-arm pacer to be consistent throughout the season. The franchise might consider releasing him and go for a better bowler instead ahead of the next season. 2. Colin Ingram (Delhi Capitals) Colin Ingram. (Photo Source: IANS) The South African was bought by the Delhi Capitals for an amount of Rs 6.4 crores as he became the most expensive foreign player of the season in the auction. Much was expected of this 33-year-old but runs just did not seem coming from him. Colin Ingram was used in the middle-order by DC and looked at him as someone who finishes the innings while also plays the anchoring role if needed. But the T20 veteran struggled to play spin and the Capitals botched up winning positions in few matches. He could only muster 184 runs with an average of only 18.4 this year. He couldn’t score even a half-century during the course of the 12 innings in which he batted and the Capitals might ponder over getting a better batsman than him next season to strengthen their middle-order. 3. Carlos Brathwaite (Kolkata Knight Riders) Carlos Brathwaite. (Photo Source: Instagram) Carlos Brathwaite came into the limelight back in the 2016 World T20 final against England when he hit four back-to-back sixes to get his team through to win the title. Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services in the auction for a whopping amount of Rs 5 crores. KKR mainly wanted him to be the perfect replacement if Andre Russell gets injured. But the management included even with Dre Russ in the side and the all-rounder couldn’t live up to the expectation. Brathwaite was able to play two games, in which he could only score 11 runs and could not even get a single wicket. The franchise might consider letting him go and opt for a better overseas bowler instead, the department which leaked runs heavily this season. 4. Mohit Sharma (Chennai Super Kings) Mohit Sharma. (Photo Source: IANS) CSK came into the auction looking at only two Indian players maximum and also with a limited budget. They ended up buying Mohit Sharma only for Rs 5 crores and the pacer played only a solitary game this season. He bowled three overs and conceded 27 runs besides picking up a wicket as well. It was strange to see him warming the bench for the rest of the season. But the Men in Yellow had some decent pacers like Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo up their sleeves. Also, with the team mostly playing on the turning tracks, his services weren’t needed. Maybe CSK will look to release him ahead of the next season and Mohit can ply his trade in another team where he might get more opportunities. 5. Shivam Dube (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Shivam Dube. (Photo Source: Twitter) Shivam Dube’s exploits in Ranji Trophy and in the inaugural T20 Mumbai League earned him a whopping bid in the auction ahead of the 2019 season. He was also in the starting XI of the RCB in the first few matches. But the left-hander couldn’t do justice to the price tag. There could be many reasons for him not performing to the expectations but Dube should’ve at least made a case with an odd blitzkrieg while batting at 7. Moreover, he wasn’t used much with the bowl by Virat Kohli and the fact that, with too many superstars, the Mumbai player never got enough deliveries to prove his mettle with the bat. When he got a chance, the left-hander failed to make an impact. Dube ended his debut season with only 40 runs in four outings and he is likely to go back into the auction again. 6. Akshdeep Nath (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Akshdeep Nath. (Photo: Kunal Chakrabarty/IANS) Akshdeep Nath’s batting position was never fixed this season. But he disappointed on most occasions despite getting a chance to bat at three or four in some matches. In a line-up consisting of superstars, Akshdeep didn’t have to take a lot of pressure and could’ve become a silent hero of the team. But with only 61 runs in five innings, he hasn’t justified the talent he possesses. The franchise had shelled Rs 3.6 crores for him in the auction and might release him ahead of the next season. With Gurkeerat Mann playing well in the limited chances, Akshdeep might have to look for any other team next year in the IPL. 7. Barinder Sran (Mumbai Indians) Barinder Sran. (Photo Source: Twitter) This Mumbai Indians left-arm medium pacer was bought for Rs 3.4 crores. Barinder Sran had a good season back in 2016 but failed to replicate the same in the last two seasons. This year he played for Mumbai Indians and being the left-arm pacer, was expected to make a mark. After Jason Behrendorff left the team midway to join the national team, the management looked up to Sran to make a similar impact like the Australian. But Sran was targetted by the oppositions as a weak link in the line-up and the fast bowler didn’t have an answer. He conceded runs at an economy of more than 12 in the two matches he played and the team was forced to play an extra overseas bowler in Mitchell McClenaghan ahead of Evin Lewis who is a decent bet in the top order. 8. Colin De Grandhomme (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Colin de Grandhomme. (Photo: IANS) Colin De Grandhomme, the Kiwi all-rounder, was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the previous edition of IPL, for Rs 2.2 crores. He played some important innings for them last year but failed to replicate his form this time around. After retaining him, he only made 46 runs at an average of just 15.33. His strike-rate also went down drastically, from 155 in the 2018 IPL to 93 this season. It was just not good enough for the 32-year-old, who is known to score runs at a quick pace in the death overs. He also could not do much with the ball in the hand, going for 11 runs per over. This actually sums up RCB’s campaign this year, with many good players failing to make an impact. 9. Lockie Ferguson (Kolkata Knight Riders) Lockie Ferguson. (Photo: Kuntal Chakrabarty/IANS) Lockie Ferguson has troubled many batsmen with his extra pace at the international level. For the same reason, the Kolkata franchise sought his services for Rs 1.6 crores. But the pacer ended up conceding 10.76 runs per over in the five matches he played picking only a couple of wickets. Ferguson bowled a total of 17 overs and was taken away for 183 runs by the oppositions. Maybe his style of bowling was not suitable for a team which plays its half of the matches at the Eden Gardens which is an extremely small ground. KKR might release Ferguson ahead of the next season and more than them, it will be good for the Kiwi as he can make a better impact in any other team. 10. Prayas Ray Barman (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Prayas Ray Barman. (Photo Source: Twitter) Prayas Ray Burman came into this season with a lot of hype and expectations and that clearly might have affected him. Moreover, the pressure of playing for a high-profile franchise like RCB also is likely to have played a part in him underperforming. He became the youngest debutant in the history of the tournament after getting a cap for the game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). However, it turned out to be a nightmare for the youngster. He went for 56 runs in his four-over spell with SRH pummelling 232 runs in 20 overs. Though Prayas scored 19 runs with the bat, his primary job is bowling and never got another opportunity for the rest of the season.
