IPL 2022: 5 Players who made comeback after long time in this season

The Indian Premier League has been the “go-to” league for every player to prove himself for bigger platforms. Since its introduction in 2008, it has been one of the best leagues in the game. Over the years, its value has increased significantly as well. This league has provided the platform for youngsters to shine on the brightest stage. Stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav got breakthroughs for the national team through the IPL. This year too, the fans have witnessed the rise of many youngsters as well. Apart from youngsters, other established cricketers are making a comeback this year. These stars went unsold during the previous editions and this season has provided them with revitalising their career. Let us have a look at them – 5 players who have made a comeback after a long time in IPL 2022 1. Aaron Finch (last season: 2020) Aaron Finch. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Australia’s limited-overs skipper has played for numerous IPL teams over the years. For a solid batter in the limited-overs format, Aaron Finch’s numbers are not satisfactory. He has managed to score just 2070 runs in 89 IPL games so far, averaging a meagre 25.88. Finch was a part of RCB during the 2020 season. During his time with RCB, he got ample amount of chances to prove himself. But in 12 games, he scored just 268 runs. Later on, he was released by RCB. He was left unsold in the 2021 as well as in the 2022 mega auction. However, Finch came in as a replacement for Alex Hales. His absence for over one and half years and decent performances for KKR this season have somehow shown that he has made a comeback. 2. David Willey (last season: 2018) David Willey. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) David Willey has been one of the regular faces in the English T20I team since his debut in 2015. He is well known for his ability to swing the ball and produce early breakthroughs. With 32 T20I matches, he has some experience to provide. Ahead of the 2019 season, he was retained by CSK but he pulled out of the T20 league due to personal commitments. However, in 2020, he was released as CSK already had a strong bowling unit. During that auction, he was unsold as no team wanted to have a pinch hitter and a swing bowler on their side. But, this year, RCB has included him in the side. Willey has made it to the IPL circuit after a gap of nearly three years. For a regular face in a top international squad, it is a long duration. 3. Pradeep Sangwan (last season: 2018) Pradeep Sangwan. (Photo Source: Twitter) During the 2008 U19 World Cup, Pradeep Sangwan was Kohli’s main man. He led the bowling unit and provided the team with crucial breakthroughs. In the 2008 IPL auction, he was selected by Delhi Daredevils ahead of Virat Kohli. But, his form dipped and he was in and out of the IPL sides. During the 2018 season, he was picked by Mumbai Indians wherein, he bowled for two overs and conceded 19 runs. Later on, he was dropped. For three consecutive seasons, he went unsold. However, Gujarat Titans management decided to pick him up for the 2022 season. Even in the 2022 season, he got his chance during the second half of the tournament. But, this time, he put up a solid show with the ball during his comeback game against RCB. 4. Rishi Dhawan (last season: 2017) Rishi Dhawan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Recently, Rishi Dhawan made it to the headlines because of his impressive performances during the 2021-2022 domestic season. He led from the front for Himachal Pradesh and pushed his state to its maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy in the last season. Apart from this, he also had an excellent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this year. But, to be fair, he rarely got any chance to prove himself in the IPL. He was picked by KKR during the 2017 IPL auction, but he was benched for the whole season. During the 2016 season, he played only two games and accumulated 14 runs and two wickets. This time around, he has played two games for Punjab so far. It will be interesting to see if PBKS management decides to give him more chances to showcase his talents. If he does well, the next few seasons might open the door to the national side. 5. Tymal Mills (last season: 2017) Tymal Mills. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Tymal Mills has been a victim of injuries throughout his career. He made a comeback to the national side during the T20 World Cup in 2021. Although England were eliminated in the semi-final, he had a decent tournament with the ball. His performance caught the attention of the Mumbai management. During the 2022 mega auction, he was picked by the five-time champions and has been a part of a bowling unit which is headed by Jasprit Bumrah. During the 2017 season, he was a part of the RCB squad. In five games, he picked as many wickets. Later on, he was dropped and took more than four years to make a comeback.
