Just like Tim David, even Devon Conway was dropped during the first half of IPL 2022. The Kiwi cricketer only played the IPL opener against KKR and then returned back against SRH. In his debut match, Conway scored just three runs after which Chennai decided to bench him.

Initially, his omission from the playing XI also occurred because of Chennai’s bleak bowling attack. The franchise had replaced the southpaw with Chris Jordan to bolster the pace bowling. Additionally, Moeen Ali’s availability at the top also refrained Conway from getting further opportunities.

However, in the ninth game against Hyderabad, the 30-year old made his re-entry by scoring an unbeaten 85 runs. More importantly, even Conway’s opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad almost scored an impressive hundred.

Post his comeback match, Conway also smashed two fifty-plus scores. Overall, the Kiwi batter finished with 252 runs from 7 games at an average of 42. All in all, certainly Conway’s late-blooming will cast him as an established frontline opener in IPL 2023.
