IPL 2022: 5 Reasons why LSG can win the trophy this season

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have got off to a fine start in IPL 2022 with three wins in five league matches, and are positioned at the third spot in the points table. After securing a loss in their tournament opener against Gujarat Titans (GT), they won three consecutive games but faced a loss in their previous game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). The biggest positives for LSG in the previous game against RR were the bowling performances in the powerplay overs and the return of one of the key players, Marcus Stoinis. After a brilliant display in the powerplay overs, they gave away around 65-70 runs in 10 overs, which was not bad for a ground like the Wankhede. In the batting department, Stoinis came in at number 8 and smashed 38* off 17 balls, but the team lost the game by a whisker. The two all-rounders, Krunal Pandya and Jason Holder, already have proved their skills in the previous editions of the IPL and can play a crucial role to clinch the title victory. In three appearances, Holder has grabbed five wickets and contributed 16 runs, while Krunal has contributed 68 runs and picked up three wickets in five matches. The other players, who can come in handy to play this role are, Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda. Although Deepak Hooda has not bowled quite often, he can be a steady customer in the middle overs. As opposed to him, Stoinis is an experienced bowler in this format and also has a total of 30 wickets in the IPL, and is expected to bowl in the upcoming matches. 2) Experienced opening pair Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul. For LSG, this role is donned by the experienced international cricketers, KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock, who have been quite successful in the previous editions of the IPL. In a total of 99 appearances in the tournament, Rahul has opened on 67 occasions and amassed 2905 runs at an average of 50.93. On the other hand, Quinton has batted at the opening slot in all his 82 innings in IPL and has 2444 runs at an average of 31.74. In five matches of this edition, Quinton has garnered 188 runs and is looking in sublime form, while Rahul has been average with 132 runs in the same appearances as his partner. 3) Impressive track record of support staff Gautam Gambhir (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) LSG have the presence of experienced support staff in the form of Gautam Gambhir, Andy Flower, and Vijay Dahiya. The two-time IPL champion and former Indian cricketer, Gambhir, is the mentor of the team and is one of the key decision-makers, which will prove to be valuable due to his experience in facing different situations. The former Zimbabwe great, Andy Flower, has experience in leading illustrious teams to the playoffs in tournaments like The Hundred, CPL, T10, and PSL. In the PSL 2021, Flower coached the Multan Sultans team to their maiden title victory, while emerging as the runner-up in the 2022 edition. Vijay has donned the coaching role since 2007 when he was appointed the coach of the Delhi domestic team. In 2009, he served as the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In the 2020 edition, he was the head talent scout for Delhi Capitals (DC). 4) Depth in batting Deepak Hooda. If the top-order batters like Rahul and De Kock fail to provide a contribution, the team can bring in Jason Holder due to his pressure handling capability. In the case of a good start, they have two options in the form of Stoinis and Deepak Hooda, who have proven ball-striking abilities. In the last game against RR, the bowlers like Dushmantha Chameera and Avesh Khan provided a glimpse of their skills with the bat by hitting two boundaries and a single six respectively. Out of their three wins, two have been won by chasing down the score, and on these occasions, the team got off to a good start and the middle order aced the crunch moments. Though the team lost against RR by a close call, Stoinis’ contribution at number eight (38* off 17 ) remained significant. 5) Strong Indian backups Ankit Singh Rajpoot. In place of him, the team brought in Krishnappa Gowtham, who has picked three wickets in two appearances at an economy of 6.63. The player with over 50 appearances in the IPL, Manan Vohra, has not got enough opportunities in the recent few editions. But he has been in good form in domestic cricket with 273 runs in five innings of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021/22. In the spin department, Shahbaz Nadeem can act as a replacement for youngster Ravi Bishnoi. On the other hand, the pacer Ankit Rajpoot returned with 10 wickets in four appearances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and emerged as UP’s best bowler in Ranji Trophy 2021/22 with 12 wickets in three matches.
