The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have their plate full with injury issues this Indian Premier League (IPL) season and now yet another overseas player in their ranks have fallen injured. Australian fast bowler Moises Henriques has injured himself in the warm-up sessions ahead of the Kings’ crucial tie against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday and what is worse is that Ravichandran Ashwin’s side cannot even replace him as per the event’s rules even if he cannot return to action soon.

The 2014 runners-up already have two of their prime spinners – Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Varun Chakravarthy, who they bought this year for a big amount, yet to regain fitness from injury. “Henriques injured himself after being named in the side a couple of days ago,” Kings XI coach Mike Hesson was quoted as saying by News18 in Delhi where the game will take place. Both KXIP and DC have 10 points from nine matches at the moment with the latter leading because of a better net run-rate.

“His injury is going to rule him out for a period of time. So that’s unfortunate and you can’t have a replacement after seven games through injury. So there will be no replacement sought.”

KXIP coach hopeful of young Mujeeb’s return

The KXIP coach, though, is hopeful that Afghan spinner Mujeeb, who was in great form last year, will clear the fitness test to play against DC. He said the teenager made good progress and was not in as much pain as he was in a few days ago. Varun, on the other hand, fractured his finger and is out for a long time. Hesson hoped that all the members of the squad would be able to chip in during the rest of the season.

Punjab’s last match happened four days ago in which they replicated their close win over Rajasthan Royals with Ashwin, who faced outrage for ‘Mankading’ Jos Buttler from the same side in their first match on March 25, getting picked as the man of the match.
