Vijay Shankar’s fighting and promising knock ending in a heartbreaking manner is perhaps the fine line that might put down curtains on his World Cup hopes. Shankar had walked in to bat in testing conditions with India in all sorts of trouble in the ongoing fifth ODI against New Zealand in Wellington. It was a chance for him to show his potential and it would not be entirely wrong to say that Shankar did manage to impress.

India were reeling at 18 for 4 when Shankar walked out in the middle to join Ambati Rayudu. Rohit Sharma’s decision to bat first was turning out to be a poor one as Matt Henry and Trent Boult were spitting fire. Henry gave the hosts the perfect start by cleaning up Rohit Sharma for just 2.

Shikhar Dhawan joined Rohit in the hut soon too, falling to Boult for just 6. Newcomer Shubman Gill failed once again, departing for just 7. Boult then piled more misery on the tourists by dismissing Dhoni for just 1 and leave India reeling at 18 for 4. However, before New Zealand could make further inroads in the game, Shankar steadied the ship along with Rayudu.

He mixed caution with aggression as the duo took the score past the 100-run mark. But just when it looked like Shankar would score his maiden ODI fifty, he was run out due to a misunderstanding. The dismissal took place in the 32nd over bowled by Colin Munro. Shankar stroked the fifth over of the delivery wide of short. Shankar was waiting for the ball to cross the fielder but Rayudu was not watching his partner and set off for a single.

Shankar tried to stop his partner but it was too late. And by the time, the allrounder decided to complete the run, it was too late. Jimmy Neesham missed the direct hit but luckily Munro caught the ball and did the rest, leaving Shankar furious. Shankar departed after scoring 45.
