It was a special day for the burly Afghanistan gloveman Mohammad Shahzad on Tuesday as he slammed a hundred against India – his first against a team in the top 10 – and the game ended with his side not losing the game but tying to get at least a point. The 30-year-old player also picked the Man of the Match award in the game which he and his colleagues, as well as the supporters, will remember for a long time to come.

Shahzad hit 124 runs in just 116 balls and his innings included 11 fours and seven sixes. Wickets kept tumbling at the other end even as he continued to belt the Indian bowlers. Although India did not play their frontline bowlers in the match, that doesn’t reduce the significance of Shahzad’s innings.

During the day, Shahzad had another funny moment off the ground. He was seen talking with television presenter Suhail Chandhok during a mock commentary session ahead of the match. He gave a call to Jatin Sapru, a well-known TV host, who had requested Shahzad for a helicopter shot during the game.

‘Not helicopter but ferrari’

The right-hand batsman, who is known for his helicopter shots, couldn’t manage one during the match and replied back to Sapru: “Sorry jatinbhai no helicopter but Ferrari is there.”

Afghanistan kept coming at India even after a 110-run opening stand between openers KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu. The middle-order batsmen could not maintain the momentum and thanks to some controversial umpiring decisions, India slipped and eventually fell short of the target by a solitary run. It was the first –ever tied match in the 34-year history of Asia Cup and also the first-ever that featured Afghanistan.

The loss though did not harm India as they already booked their place in the final by the virtue of their thumping wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan in the Super 4 stage. Afghanistan were eliminated after they lost two close games against those two sides. The other finalist was set to be determined in the Bangladesh-Pakistan game at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
