Mumbai pacer Tushar Despande shuns IPL trials for club match
"I've never gone for trials with an IPL team."
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become one of the most sought-after tournaments over the last few years and youngsters from around the world dream of playing in the T20 event. A lot of them have also preferred the domestic event over their national team. However, 23-year-old right-arm fast bowler Tushar Deshpande has recently chosen some other way.
The Mumbai speedster was called up by Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), who are yet to win the championship, for a trial in Mohali on Friday and Saturday. However, he decided not to attend the same and rather decided to turn out for his club team Parsee Gymkhana in a Purshottam Shield round match against CCI, which is scheduled to take place at the same time.
Thereās nothing that Iāll gain by giving these trials
āIāve never gone for trials with an IPL team. Earlier too, the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and the Rajasthan Royals called me for trials. I believe that if Iām giving my 100% in the matches that Iām playing in, why should I give trials?
Thereās nothing that Iāll gain by giving these trials. If I bowl well in the matches that Iām playing in, then someone will obviously pick me,ā Deshpande was quoted as saying in Cricbuzz.
āIāve heard from the other players that around 60-70 players come for these trials, and you get hardly an over or two to bowl. And thereās no pressure also. So, thereās no point going there. Therefore, I preferred playing an official game to that, rather than going all the way to Mohali and bowling two to four overs,ā he added.
Deshpande recently played for Mumbai in their opening match of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy against Railways at Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi. He finished with impressive figures of 24.2-7-70-6. The seamer also did well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and returned with 15 wickets in eight matches, and therefore contribute in a significant way to Mumbaiās victorious campaign.
