The New Zealand Women side have shattered the batting records in their most recent international game against the Irish Women. They posted a mammoth 490/4 on the scoreboard in their stipulated 50 overs in the first ODI of their tour. With the effort, they broke their own previous record of the highest team total in the ODI history. The previous highest team total in the history of ODI cricket was New Zealand’s 455/5 against Pakistan Women back in the year 1997.

Coming to the historic feat, the White Ferns, as the New Zealand Women are popularly known as, opted to bat first on a good batting wicket. Their skipper Suzie Bates opened the innings with Jess Watkin. The two openers gave a flying start to the team with a 172 run opening stand in just 113 deliveries. The partnership was broken by Gaby Lewis in the 19th over when she dismissed Watkin on 62.

Maddy Green was the new batter at the crease. She joined Bates in the batting fest. Both Bates and Green went on to score their respective centuries. Bates also managed to score 150 but failed to add more to her tally post the landmark. She was dismissed on 151 that came off 94 deliveries with 24 fours and 2 sixes.

Towards the end, Amelia Kerr played a whirlwind innings of 81 off just 45 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes to propel the team total to 490/4 in 50 overs. It is worth noting that only 7 sixes were hit in the innings. The Irish side, in their response, bundled out for 144 in 35.3 overs to give New Zealand Women a thundering 346 run win.

Other big numbers in the frame

Meanwhile, the highest score in any men’s senior limited overs or List A cricket is Surrey’s magnificent effort of 496 against Gloucestershire.
