Priya Punia - Indian cricket's latest Internet sensation

22-year-old Priya Punia from Rajasthan has come a long way in recent years to finally barged into the Indian cricket team, replacing Veda Krishnamurthy for the New Zealand tour. She has been knocking on the door quite regularly for a long time now, but the opportunity took its time to finally present itself.

Priya’s father Surendra Punia saw this dream with her and played a big role in making her what she is right now. He built a ground for her so that she can practice and do something big for the country. He took a plot on loan and also sold his personal property to set up a sports complex.

When his daughter started showing more interest towards cricket than Football, he built some nets and proper pitches for her so that she could practice alongside other guys. All of it paid off when she finally made it to the stateside and started amassing runs for fun. Priya also represented the North Zone in 2015, where she chipped in with a few big knocks and earned limelight for the first time.

She loves batting at number three and is potentially an heir to some senior cricketers like Mithali Raj, who is in the twilight of her career. Although 22 is not exactly the breakthrough age in women’s cricket, it’s better to arrive late than unprepared and she certainly has hoarded great confidence before getting in here.
