Rahul Dravid named as U19 coach for the upcoming Youth Asia Cup

Former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid has been named as coach of the U19 Indian side that will travel to Sri Lanka for the Youth Asia Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had released a statement stating that a 15-man squad would be dispatched from the country to take part in the tournament.

Abhishek Sharma, an all-rounder who has played with the Punjab colts has been named as the skipper for the upcoming tournament. The series will be held in Sri Lanka from the 13th to the 24th of December. India shared the inaugural Youth Asia Cup trophy in 2012 with arch-rivals Pakistan after the match was tied when the tournament was held in Malaysia.

“The All India junior selection committee of the BCCI met in Delhi today to select the India under-19 team for the Youth Asia Cup — 2016 to be held in Sri Lanka from December 13 to 24,” a statement from the board read.

Earlier this year, the Board had passed a resolution stating that no U19 player can play a World Cup twice, meaning that some of the players such as Washington Sundar could not stake his claim for the upcoming World Cup.

As a coach, Rahul Dravid has impressed everyone quite a bit. Having worked with the Indian ‘A’ team, Rahul Dravid has helped many a player blossom from a talent into a wonderful player. Some of these examples can go on to include Manish Pandey and Hardik Pandya, both of whom have impressed in overseas conditions as well.

Dravid was also the coach of the Indian cricket team for the U19 World Cup which saw the Indians go unbeaten for 15 odd games before being beaten in the final by the West Indies.
