Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan is the talk of the town, at least in the shortest format of the game. Rashid after his amazing success with the national team has been playing T20 leagues around the world. From the CPL in the Caribbean to the Big Bash League down under as well as the Indian Premier League he has captured the imagination of fans as well as franchises across continents. He is now off to England to play the T20 Blast where he was signed up by Sussex.

After Rashid’s successful stint in the Big Bash with the Adelaide Strikers, Jason Gillespie who is the head coach of the Sussex team contracted the youngster for the upcoming season. He had said that the 19-year-old’s talent coupled with his work ethic and attitude has impressed him a lot. This will be the Afghan spinner’s first stint in the English T20 circuit.

He set off for England and put that up on Twitter stating, “Off to excited about @VitalityBlast can’t wait to play for @SussexCCC C U Soon Guys”

English women’s cricketer Danielle Wyatt who also plays for the same county replied to his tweet in excitement. Interestingly the duo have quite a report exchanging tweets on the social media platform very often.

Rashid in England

The leg-spinner though a crafty bowler and has an air of mystery around his skill will have to mould his bowling according to the English conditions. The wickets in England aren’t dry as in the other part of the world where he plays most of his cricket. However, being a wrist spinner he has the ability to make the ball do a bit even on a really dead surface.

Sussex team management on Rashid

“We are delighted that Rash has agreed to join us,” Gillespie had said after signing him. “His form for Afghanistan and the T20 teams he has played for over the last couple of years has been phenomenal. I have been incredibly impressed with his attitude, work ethic and team-first mentality.”

Sussex’s Director of Cricket, Keith Greenfield said: “Rashid is the most sought-after spin talent in the world currently. He has made a significant impact in all the teams he has played for to date, so to make this move happen and have him join the other exciting talent we already have in our T20 line up is fantastic.”
