Indian youngster Rishabh Pant has been on the scanner off-late after a string of poor performances in the ODI series against Australia. Pant had a terrific start to the 2019 calendar year with a mind-boggling century at the SCG but has failed to back it up with similar renditions and bottled some good chances with reckless shots.

Nevertheless, the management has been backing the swashbuckling youngster, who never feats to play some buccaneering cricket. Indian management is no stranger to such cricketers as we have seen the likes of Krishnamachari Srikkanth in the 80s and Virender Sehwag in the last decade.

Pant, who was being mocked by the fans with MSD chants on the field, said he will not be thinking about it too much. He also urged the critics to not compare him to the great MS Dhoni as he is still on the learning curve and has a lot to achieve. He also said that the 37-year-old World Cup winning skipper helps him become a better cricketer with good conversations every time.

“I’m not thinking about the comparison too much. As a player, I want to learn from him (Dhoni). He’s a legend of the game. I don’t want people to compare but I can’t stop them from doing so. I’m close to him and talk to him about everything how I can improve my game on and off the field”.

Winning is the only thing we are focusing

He also talked about how his mindset was during the Australia tour and how much they wanted to win the series there. Replying to Bishan Singh Bedi‘s accusations of complacency and wild attitude, Pant said he’s not perfect but will strive hard to learn every day.

“I’m not saying I’m perfect. I want to learn and keep improving every day. When I went there (Australia), I had something inside, wanted to win a series outside India. Every team member was thinking that we have to do something different and make our team win the series. Every time we go out on to the field, we only think of winning the game. That’s the only thing we are focusing,” Pant said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
