After recovering from his hamstring injury, Rohit Sharma is all set to join Team India’s Test squad for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 33-year-old landed in Australia after clearing the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. At the present point in time, he is confined to a two-bedroom apartment in Sydney during his mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

To start with, the veteran wasn’t a part of any of the three squads for the Australia tour. But later he was added to the Test squad only to be ruled out of the first two matches in Adelaide and Melbourne. The third Test starts on January 7, but doubts over him taking part in the game still remains. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to test his fitness after the isolation period.

No competitive cricket for Rohit Sharma since November 10

As per reports in Times Now, the Nagpur-born will join the Test team on Wednesday, December 30 after flying from Melbourne to Sydney. Rohit hasn’t played any form of cricket since the final of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) and he has to pass another fitness test in order to be eligible for selection. Due to his injury, he also had to miss quite a few games in the cash-rich T20 tournament.

Moreover, if reports are to be believed, the third and penultimate Test will be played in Melbourne itself after the sudden COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney. An official announcement is yet to be made though. The coronavirus outbreak has gotten Cricket Australia (CA), well and truly, on its toes. The Melbourne Cricket Ground played hosts to the second Boxing Day Test.

As far as Rohit is concerned, he last played an overseas Test back in 2018-19 in Australia. But after he was promoted to open the batting in the home Tests against South Africa and Bangladesh, he showed his class, even scoring a double century.

If he gets to play in the third Test, the Indian batting lineup will be bolstered to a large extent. But since India managed to dominate the Aussies in the MCG Test, it remains to be seen who he replaces in the playing eleven.
