After the ball tampering scandal at Newlands in Cape Town, Australia lost two of their stalwarts- Steve Smith and David Warner- for a year. Thereafter, their batting was weakened to a significant extent and has failed to deliver. Albeit the duo is set for a return in April next year after their ban ends on March, the current bunch of batsmen haven’t shown much promise for the future.

In the meantime, Shane Warne, the former Australian cricketer, has called for replacing Graeme Hick as their batting coach. Rather he wants a retired Aussie to take up the role while putting forth a few prominent names. Back in September 2016, the former Englishman was appointed for the role.

We’ve had great cricketers

“It’s time for a change. The one thing I would say is … Australian cricket over the last 25-30 years has had some terrific batsmen. Graeme Hick has been there for the last few years and seen that the players are making the same mistakes all the time; it’s time for a change,” Warne was quoted as saying in The Times of India (TOI).

“Whether it be Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey … I’m sure any of those guys could do it. We’ve had great cricketers for the past 25 years and they [should] be around the cricket team more often. Get Glenn McGrath with the bowlers … there are so many opportunities,” the retired leg-spinner added.

Hick was one of England’s most prolific run scorer during his playing days. He donned the national jersey in 65 Tests and 120 Tests in which he scored 3383 and 3846 runs respectively. The veteran also boasts of a stunning 136 centuries and 158 half-centuries in 526 first-class matches.

As far as Australia is concerned, the team is currently playing a three-match T20I series against India. Prior to that, they lost the three-match ODI series against South Africa and also couldn’t get over the line in the one-off T20I at Carrara Oval in Queensland.
