India has got some new faces in their team for the Sri Lanka tour. The tour which was supposed to begin on July 13 has now been postponed to July 18. However, the team has reached Colombo already and is getting prepared for the ODI and T20I series ahead. The team members even posed for a pre-series photoshoot.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted some pictures from the photoshoots of the six new faces in the team, players who are yet to make their debuts for India. Despite the squad being inexperienced, there are a handful of players who have previously played for India. On the other hand, there are players like Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and the captain, Shikhar Dhawan, who are vastly experienced.

Speaking of uncapped players, there are six names that pop up, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Varun Chakravarthy, Chetan Sakariya, Nitish Rana, Devdutt Padikkal, and Krishnappa Gowtham. All of the six players have impressed the selectors in some or the other tournaments. Most of these players have a substantial IPL career, except for Sakariya, who made his debut in IPL earlier this year.

Varun Chakravarthy, Devdutt Padikkal in line to make India debuts in Lanka

The BCCI posted a thread on Twitter in which the pictures of the six players who are still uncapped were seen. Speaking of these players, Varun Chakravarthy, Devdutt Padikkal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are the most likely to get a bit of game-time. Padikkal was the second-highest run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this year and also scored four consecutive centuries during that tournament.

Gaikwad has been really impressive for the India A team in the past couple of years and with his performances for Chennai Super Kings in the 2020 and 2021 seasons of the IPL, Gaikwad has solidified his position as one of the youngsters probable for an Indian national team call-up. Nitish Rana is another candidate, who has represented India A in recent times, but it can’t be said whether the Delhi batter will get his chance on this tour or not.

Chakravarthy has been in the minds of the selectors for some time now. He was called up for the Indian tour of Australia last year after IPL 2020. However, an injury ruled him out of the tour. Meanwhile, he was once again called up for the T20I series at home against England but failed to qualify for selection after not passing the fitness tests.
