ODI World Cup 2023: Fans slam BCCI for low crowd turnout in opening fixture between England and New Zealand
England and New Zealand are locking horns at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has finally got underway on Thursday, October 05 as England and New Zealand are locking horns in the curtain raiser of the tournament. However, the opening game isn’t being attended by a large number of fans as pic of empty seats at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has been going viral all over social media.
Fans are quite unhappy with the low turnout of people to watch the opening game and are comparing it with the opening game of World Cup 2015 held in Australia. The viral image compares the crowd present at the opening game of the 2023 World Cup to that of the first match of the 2015 World Cup between Australia and England.
Coming back to the match, New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to bowl first. England got off to a flying start as Jonny Bairstow flicked Trent Boult for a six on just the second ball of the game. However, New Zealand struck back quickly as Matt Henry dismissed Dawid Malan (14 off 24) in the eighth over.
Joe Root top scores for England
Moeen Ali (11 off 17) and Harry Brook (25 off 16) also departed cheaply leaving England reeling at 118/4. However, Joe Root held one end and played a magnificent innings of 77 (86) smashing four fours and a six.
However, their stand couldn’t continue for long as Buttler was dismissed by Matt Henry. Root lost his wicket against Glenn Phillips in the 42nd over. Late Cameos from Adil Rashid (15 off 13) and Mark Wood (13 off 14) took England’s score to 282/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers for Kiwis with figures of 3/48 in ten overs.
