Afghanistan have shaken the cricket world with their heroics in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Placed alongside India, Bangladesh and Australia in the Super Eight stage of the tournament, the side defeated Australia and Bangladesh, reaching the semi-finals of the competition.

Afghanistan had a peculiar moment in the final game against Bangladesh when Gulbadin Naib apparently faked an injury to delay the proceedings. Naib held his hamstring and fell to the ground right when Afghanistan coach Jonathon Trott suggested the players to slow down the game with a rain intervention on the cards. At the time, Bangladesh were behind Afghanistan in terms of DLS par score.

Since then, the moment has become a major point of discussion. Many came forward to discuss whether Naib was faking his injury or whether he was actually injured. However, an Instagram post by Afghan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq seems to have confirmed that Naib was faking it. “Sorry @gulbadin.naib but had to post this,” Naveen-ul-Haq captioned the post.

Afghanistan take on South Africa in semi-final 1

Speaking of Afghanistan, the side has had a fairytale run in the T20 World Cup 2024 so far. After breezing past the group stages, Afghanistan held their own against the likes of Bangladesh and Australia in the Super Eights.

The side only lost to India in the Super Eight stage and registered brilliant wins against Bangladesh and Australia, eliminating the Men in Yellow from the competition. Afghanistan will now take on the unbeaten South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, in the first semi-final on Thursday, June 27.

The Proteas have been in exceptional form in the tournament and have yet to lose a single game. They will aim to continue their form and make it to the summit clash of the tournament. On the other hand, there could be another story to be written for Afghanistan, as they look set on realising their dreams. It is worth noting that the winner of Semi-Final 1 will play against the winner of the clash between India and England.
