[Watch] WTC 2023-25 Final: Alex Carey gifts wicket with reverse-sweep to Keshav Maharaj
Carey was looking set for a big knock before one misjudged shot turned the tide.
Alex Carey was dismissed on the first ball of the 52nd over by Keshav Maharaj of Day 1 of the final of the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship at Lord's. The southpaw was dismissed moments after the first over was bowled after Tea.
It was a premeditated shot from Carey who completely missed the ball. The ball ended up sneaking under his willow. The full ball pitched and spun from off stump to peg back the middle stump. Carey had to walk back after registering 23 off 31 deliveries.
Maharaj was introduced into the game in the 36th over of the day after the four pacers had already yielded four wickets. Carey's wicket was the sixth one to fall for Australia. Earlier in the day, the Pat Cummins-led side were invited to bat by South Africa.

The Proteas did not take a lot of time to wrap up the opposition's innings post the wicketkeeper-batter's dismissal. Pat Cummins (one off six), Beau Webster (72 off 92), Nathan Lyon (zero off four), and Mitchell Starc (one off 12) departed in no time as Australia were shot out for 212 in 56.4 overs.
Usman Khawaja was the first batter to depart after facing 20 deliveries. He headed back for a duck. Kagiso Rabada, who ended up with a five-wicket haul to his name, struck in the same over to get rid of Cameron Green (four off three). Steve Smith combined with Webster to string together a vital stand together.
Rabada surpassed Donald to achieve major landmark
Fiery pacer Kagiso Rabada, who secured his 17th five-fer in Test cricket, overtook the legendary Allan Donald to become the fourth-highest wicket-taker for South Africa. He also became the third South African bowler with multiple five-wicket hauls at Lordโs. Donald and Makhaya Ntini are the two other bowlers with the same feat.
