Bangladesh’s qualification to the semi-finals of Champions Trophy 2017 was a composite of their fortune and hard work as they were on verge of being knocked out of the tournament against Australia just before rain interrupted the game and ended the match in a washout and later the team made one of the greatest comebacks in ODI cricket against New Zealand.

By qualifying in the final 4, Bangladesh wrote a new page on their history as they will be playing their first ever semi-final game in International cricket, in other words, this is the first time they have qualified among the top 4 teams of a tournament with semi-finals. In the past, the Tigers have played 3 tournament finals; twice in Asia Cup and once in a Tri-series.

Overall, they have played in only 5 knockout games in International cricket so far and lost all the 5. Their last two knockout games were against India, the same team that they will be playing in the semi-final on 15th June at the Birmingham.

Talking about the knockout games in the ICC events, the 2017 CT will be the 3rd for Bangladesh as they played in the pre-quarters of the 2000 Champions Trophy and the most recently in World Cup 2015 where they made it to the quarter-finals.

Out those five, Bangladesh came close to a win twice; in the 2009 Tri-series final against Sri Lanka and in the 2012 Asia Cup final against Pakistan. Bangladesh reduced Sri Lanka to 6/5 in 2009 final while defending 152 but the Sri Lankans crawled to 114/8 in the 44th over and finished off the chase in the 49th with help of Maharoof and Muralitharan. While in the 2012 Asia Cup final, Bangladesh came close to chase down the 237-run target set by Pakistan – they needed 9 from the last over but managed to score only 6 runs.
