Indian skipper Mithali Raj became the highest run-scorer in Women’s ODI cricket by scoring a fifty against Australia in the 23rd game of Women’s World Cup 2017 at Bristol. The 34-year-old went past the record holder, former England captain Charlotte Edwards who aggregated 5992 runs in her ODI cricket.

With a single off 29th over bowled by Ellyse Perry, Mithali achieved the record and in the next over, with a six down the ground off Kirsten Beams, the Indian Women’s team captain became the first Woman cricket in ODI history to complete 6000 runs.

The first player in Men’s cricket to complete 6000 runs was Sir Vivian Richards after whom 51 players accomplished the feat including 8 Indian cricketers who went on the score over 8000 ODI runs. Charlotte Edwards became the leading run-getter in Women’s ODIs during the last Women’s World Cup with a century against India and later became the first Woman to aggregate 5000 ODI runs.

Considering the players with over 6000 runs in ODI cricket (Men’s and Women’s), Mithali will be at No.13 among 53 players in the list of players fastest to 6000 runs in ODIs as she took only 164 innings. Among the 9 players from India, only Virat Kohli (136) and Sourav Ganguly (147) took fewer innings than Mithali to complete 6000 runs.

While Mithali Raj now holds the record for being highest run-getter in Women’s ODIs, India’ Sachin Tendulkar holds the same record in ODIs and also in Tests in Men’s cricket. Interestingly, India’s Jhulan Goswami stands at the top in the wicket-takers chart in Women’s ODIs.

By occupying the top sports in run-scorers and wicket-takers, Mithali and Goswami pair became the first Indian pair to top the respective lists in the same format at the same time in International cricket either in Men’s cricket or Women’s cricket.
