The Chennai Super Kings were returning to Chepauk after a gap of two years and the fans were eager to witness the return of the yellow army. The team has a massive support in the city of Chennai and it was evident from the fact that thousands turned up to watch their practice games. CSK’s core players remain the same for this season with the exception of Ravichandran Ashwin who was purchased by the Kings XI Punjab.

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth demanded strict actions against those whose attacked the policemen during the anti-IPL protests. The protestors were demanding that the IPL matches not be held when a more pressing matter – the Centre’s failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) – was at the fore.

Rajinikanth took to Twitter to share a video in which a protester can be seen hitting a police personnel. He said, “The worst form of violence in law and order situation is attacked on uniformed personnel on duty. This form of violence has to be tackled immediately as it poses a grave danger to our country. We need more stringent laws to punish the perpetrators of the attack on police personnel on duty.”

Police Personnel had to remain vigilant throughout the game to ensure that there were no interruptions during the game. However, the protesters threw shoes from the upper tier that fell just near the South African skipper Faf du Plessis. Police took immediate action to remove them out of the stadium.

On February 16, the court had ordered the Central government to set up the CMB and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) within six weeks. The non-compliance of the apex court’s order triggered protests across the state. It remains to be seen as to whether Chepauk will host CSK’s home games in future. These protests have raised concerns over players safety and the team management surely doesn’t want to take any chance.
