Team-wise one expensive player who might be released ahead of IPL 2021

IPL 2020 has already come to an end. Mumbai Indians went on to lift the title for the fifth time, beating Delhi Capitals in the final. The 13th edition of the IPL saw many match-winners who won matches for their respective franchises. Some of these players are the big names who have been purchased by their respective franchises for a large amount of cash. A specific franchise spends a lot on a player only if they believe that he can deliver and come good for them. These big names, who are purchased for a hefty amount during an IPL auction, sometimes come good and sometimes fail to meet their team management’s expectations and thus have a bad season, much to the disappointment of their team management. IPL 2020 saw plenty of big and expensive players fail. This might result in their respective teams releasing them ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. In the article, le’s take a look at one expensive player who will be released by their team ahead of IPL 2021: 1) Chennai Super Kings- Dwayne Bravo Dwayne Bravo. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Dwayne Bravo has been one of CSK’s most loyal servants. CSK used their RTM card to get Bravo for 6.5 crores in the 2018 IPL auction. He has been playing for the Super Kings since 2011 and has given their fans countless memories to cherish forever. It is safe to call him one of the greatest players to have played for CSK. However, he hasn’t been at his best for CSK since the last two to three seasons. He has had an economy of 10 since 2018 and has been leaking runs with the ball since 2018. Barring a few good knocks in 2018 he has had a torrid time with the bat as well. He was able to play just the six matches this season and was able to take just the six wickets at an economy rate of 8.57. His time with the bat wasn’t great as well and hence, CSK should release DJ Bravo ahead of IPL 2021 and thus get 6.5 cr in their purse. Besides, Sam Curran had a great season and CSK would want to invest in him for the future. 2) Mumbai Indians- Nathan Coulter-Nile Nathan Coulter-Nile. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Aussie speedster Nathan Coulter-Nile has been playing in the biggest T20 league for quite a while now. He had represented Mumbai Indians back in 2013 and then played for Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils), Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore only to return to Mumbai Indians. MI got NCN in the 2020 IPL auction for a whopping 8 crores. Coulter-Nile didn’t play the first half of IPL 2020 as James Pattinson was doing a commendable job. When Pattinson was rested and Coulter-Nile was given his opportunity, he couldn’t really set the stage on fire and was mediocre at best. He played six matches in IPL 2020 and could pick just the three wickets at an economy rate of 8.04 As he was one of the most expensive pacers, MI may even think twice before releasing him. Besides, mostly all the players playing for MI were sensational this season and if MI need a bigger purse going into the IPL auction in IPL 2021, releasing Coulter-Nile would be a must. The return of Lasith Malinga next season would only confirm the inevitable. 3) Royal Challengers Bangalore- Aaron Finch Aaron Finch. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It is safe to say that Aaron Finch is one of the greatest players in the history of T20 cricket. Australia’s ODI and T20I skipper has been absolutely sensational in the shortest format of the game. Despite all of his achievements in T20Is, Finch has underperformed in IPL to say the least. Finch has played 85 IPL innings and has a batting average of just 25. These numbers don’t do justice to an explosive T20 superstar like the Victorian. He has played for eight different teams and still hasn’t been a consistent performer in the toughest T20 league. RCB purchased him in the IPL 2020 auction for INR 4.4 crores. Finch struggled in the tournament and couldn’t repay the faith invested by the team management. Finch could only manage 268 runs at an average and strike rate of 22 and 111 respectively. Thus there’s a huge chance of the Challengers releasing Finch ahead of IPL 2021. 4) Sunrisers Hyderabad- Manish Pandey Manish Pandey. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Manish Pandey is an IPL veteran. He was the first Indian player to score a 100 in IPL. He has played 146 IPL games and has scored 3268 runs at an average of 29.71. He has been a regular for Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2018. SRH got him in the 2018 IPL auction for a whopping INR 11 crore! Although he wasn’t all that bad SRH would have expected him to do better considering the amount they invested in him. Manish Pandey blew hot and cold in this edition’s IPL. He scored 425 runs at an average and strike rate of 32 and 127 respectively. Despite having decent numbers SRH might just let him go as they would be needing a large purse going into the next auction and releasing him might be their only way out. 5) Delhi Capitals- Shimron Hetmyer Shimron Hetmyer. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Shimron Hetmyer shot to fame with his impressive captaincy that led West Indies to their first U-19 World Cup title in 2016. Too talented to go unnoticed, Hetmyer represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019. Delhi Capitals then won the bid at INR 7.75 crores and became DC’s most expensive buy of IPL 2020. Like IPL 2019, he had a mediocre IPL 2020 as well. He only scored 180 runs in this season at an average of 25. Despite scoring a quick 40 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second Qualifier match his overall IPL numbers aren’t really inspiring. Delhi Capitals had a lot of batting collapses this season and Hetmyer was one of the major culprits in these batting collapses. His inconsistent and irresponsible batting often put DC in trouble. Thus, DC would want to release an expensive player like Hetmyer ahead of IPL 2021. 6) Kolkata Knight Riders- Sunil Narine Sunil Narine. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Sunil Narine has been with KKR for quite a while now. He has been a KKR legend and it is safe to call him one of IPL’s greatest bowling all-rounder of all time. He has won the “MVP” award twice, once in 2012 and the other in 2018. However, Narine has been a liability for KKR in the last two seasons. He has been consistently inconsistent and hasn’t come good in the crucial games for KKR. He was used as a pinch hitter to perfection until 2018 and the experiment never really came good after that. Narine had an ordinary IPL 2020 and had a batting average and strike rate of 13 and 142 respectively. He was ordinary with the ball as well and managed to pick just five wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 7.92. The fact that he was retained by KKR in 2018 for INR 8.5 crore would tempt the KKR management to release him ahead of IPL 2021, thus increasing their purse for the IPl 2021 auction. 7) Rajasthan Royals- Jaydev Unadkat Jaydev Unadkat. (Photo: Surjeet Yadav/IANS) Jaydev Unadkat has been playing for the Rajasthan Royals, who just can’t seem to stop picking him in every IPL auction. Unadkat was purchased by RR in the 2018 IPL auction for a whopping 11.5 crore Rupees! He was then released ahead of the 2019 IPL auction and purchased again for 8.5 crores. History repeated itself and RR released Unadkat again going into the IPL 2020 auction only to get him again for INR 3 crores. RR seem to be in a time loop and keep releasing Unadkat to get him again every auction. However, it is very unlikely that RR would purchase him again as they look all set to release him for good this time around. Unadkat had a lukewarm IPL 2020 and managed to pick just four wickets in seven matches. What’s worse is that he had an economy rate of close to 10 runs an over (9.91) and he made it a habit to leak runs. As RR have invested a lot of money on their overseas stars they have no option but to release Unadkat ahead of IPL 2021. 8) Kings XI Punjab- Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It is safe to call Glenn Maxwell one of the most explosive players of this era. He has made a name for himself in the shortest format of the game. However, he has only been a pale shadow of himself in the IPL and hasn’t really set the stage on fire. Maxwell has played 82 matches and has scored just 1505 runs at an average of 22. He had a forgettable IPL 2020 as well. He scored just 108 runs this season at an average of 15. It is also safe to call him one of the worst performers of IPL 2020. KXIP went all out for him in the IPL 2020 auction and got him for INR 10.75 crores. Releasing him would be a no brainer as he failed to justify his price tag. Glenn Maxwell has consistently failed in the biggest T20 league in the world and even a miracle wouldn’t be enough to see KXIP retaining him ahead of IPL 2021.
