Many memorable matches have been played that has also witnessed some remarkable individual performances. Some have been match winning while a few came in losing causes. If talking about batting, the fans have witnessed many unimaginable knocks during India-Australia matches. No matter who plays the host, batsmen from both the countries have not let any opportunity to shine for their country to go waste. Sachin Tendulkar – 139: (Photo Source: Getty Images) Sachin Tendulkar opened with Rahul Dravid in the 3rd ODI against Australia at the Nehru stadium in 2001, Indore. Tendulkar had always had a liking for the Australian bowling attack and he proved it once again by hitting a match-winning knock of 139. His knock comprised of 19 boundaries. India were batting first and although his opening partner Dravid departed early, Tendulkar batted together with VVS Laxman for a 199 runs partnership which laid the platform for a challenging total on the scoreboard. He batted till the final phases of the first innings and could be dismissed only in the 46th overs. Indian bowlers complemented Sachin’s brilliant efforts by bowling out Australia for a paltry score of 181 and they won the match by a margin of 118 runs. 9. MS Dhoni – 139*: MS Dhoni. India was batting first at Mohali after being put into bat by George Bailey. The start wasn’t good and India found themselves standing at 76/4. The next man in was MS Dhoni, who in his trademark style rescued India with a breezy century. He took India past the 300 runs mark almost single-handedly after he found some support from Virat Kohli and R Ashwin in the latter stages of the innings. His match-turning innings featured 12 fours and 5 massive hits over the fence. However, his performance went in vain as the Australians chased down the target with four wickets to spare. 8. Ricky Ponting and his team were just one step away from lifting their third World Cup. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly won the todd of the 2003 World cup finals at Johannesburg and asked the Aussies to bat first. Gilchrist and Hayden gave Australia the perfect start. But, the 14th over saw the end of Gilchrist which brought the skipper in the middle and what Ponting did thereafter is regarded as one of the best innings ever played in a World Cup final. Punter slammed 8 sixes and 4 boundaries to score 140 not out off 121 balls and fired Australia to a humongous total of 359 for two. He added 234 runs for the third wicket with Damien Martyn, who scored 88* off 84 balls. Australia eventually thrashed India by 125 runs in the final to lift the trophy. 7. The Indians had a bad start as they lost opener Ganguly and Azharuddin in back to back overs early on. However, it was Sachin Tendulkar’s day. He batted with command and took India to a challenging position. Tendulkar took the Australian attack apart for his 19th ODI century and ended at 141 off 128 deliveries, with 3 sixes and 13 fours. Tendulkar ended the match in complete control with a bowling performance of 4/38. As a result of his heroics, India won the match by 44 runs and went to the semi-finals of the tournament. 6. However, the chase was made to look very uncompetitive as Indian top order displayed one of the most dominating batting display. Openers Shikhar Dhawan (95) was the aggressor in the outstanding opening partnership of 176 runs with Rohit Sharma. Sharma then combined with Virat Kohli and chased down the target with ease. The match did not particularly belong to Rohit Sharma but he batted from start till the end for his 141 runs off 123 balls and allowed India to knock off the mammoth target against Australia for the first time and rewrite countless records. 5. India needed to score 285 to win the match and 254 to qualify for the final of the Coca-Cola cup in the year 1998. And, Tendulkar did not disappoint as he scored a wonderful knock of 143 from just 131 balls during the chase. It was his highest score in limited-overs internationals at that time. It included nine fours and five sixes. However, the objective couldn’t be achieved and India lost the match by 25 runs. A dust storm interrupted and the target was revised to 276 and 237. 4. Bailey was already having a remarkable tour and made it, even more memorable by slamming his career-best ODI innings of 156 off 139 balls against India at Nagpur in 2013. He came in to bat at number four and batted brutally also stitching a 158-run stand with Shane Watson. He then did the rest of the damage in the last ten overs with Adam Voges to propel Australia to an intimidating 350/6 after 50 overs. The innings included 6 sixes and 13 boundaries to all corners of the stadium. Unfortunately, the target was still not enough as India chased it down to win the match. 3. Sharma opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan but Dhawan soon departed. However, he continued batting flawlessly in his natural flair and dominated the inexperienced Australian pace battery who were not able to create any kind of pressure on him. He reached his century in the 37th overs. It included seven boundaries and three sixes. Sharma has a knack of converting centuries into big knocks and soon began to accelerate the rate of run flow helping his side post a total of 309 for 3 wickets in 50 overs. However, his knock went in vain as Steve Smith’s 149 off 135 balls guided Australia to a five-wicket victory. 2. Sachin Tendulkar – 175: Sachin Tendulkar. Australia had put up a daunting target of 351 for India to chase after batting first at Hyderabad in the year 2009. Tendulkar opened the innings and batted almost till the end of the chase. Wickets kept falling around him but he was on song that day. Tendulkar started cautiously but then batted seamlessly. His knock almost took the game away from the Aussies but Clint McKay left the stadium in pin drop silence after he dismissed the maestro in the 48th over. He failed to take India to a win that as they lost the match by 3 runs but despite that he was awarded the man of the match. 1. Rohit Sharma – 209: (Photo Source : PTI) On November 4, 2013, the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore saw an absolute carnage in the form of Rohit Sharma’s 209 from 158 balls. This was the third double-hundred in the format, after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. The Indian fans had not imagined that they would be treated with a special batting spectacle when India won the toss and elected to bat first. Sharma opened the innings and just like most of his stupendous knocks ended up playing till the end of the innings. The special thing about this knock was the pace at which he scored. Sharma reached his century off 112 balls in the 37th over. Later, sixes and boundaries started raining and Sharma scored at such a pace that he smacked the next hundred runs in just 33 balls. He reached the glorious milestone in the penultimate over of the match with a six. However, he was out two balls later after hitting one more six off the next delivery.
