As expected, Australia have won the second Test match and levelled the series by 2-1. It was only going to be a matter of time for them to skittle India’s last five wickets. It took only a tad more than an hour to finish the game on the fifth day thanks to the long tail of the visitors. With the series levelled, it sets up nicely for the Boxing Day Test match now which will be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Only highly optimistic people would’ve hoped for an Indian win today as Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant resumed the proceedings at 112/5. The duo showed some real grit but the former got a snorter of a delivery from Mitchell Starc and then it was a procession. Pant had to farm more strike with the tail starting from as early as number eight.

He tried his bit by playing his shots but Nathan Lyon is a world-class bowler and he continued to prove it once again. Peter Handscomb took a blinder of a catch to ink the final writing on the wall. By the time, the first drinks break arrived, Australia had scalped Umesh Yadav as well and were only a couple of wickets away from a famous win.

First win since Newlands scandal

It took only one over after the drinks for the home side to wrap up the proceedings. Pat Cummins just cleaned up the last two wickets to seal their first win since March. India were bundled out for just 140 runs in the second innings and they’ve managed to botch yet another chase this year. Australia finally managed to break the rut and Tim Paine, as a captain, registered his first Test win and the happiness was visible on his face as they gathered in the middle of a cracked pitch at the Optus Stadium.

Things were heated up throughout the Test match and it will only increase as the series now moves on to Melbourne. Any team can win the series and the bowlers from both the teams will love the fact that they have got a break of close to seven days now.
