The much awaited Australia’s tour of Bangladesh kicked off at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka with the hosts posting a significant total on a turning track. On the other hand, the visitors were already on the back foot having hardly spent 9 overs at the crease.

Earlier in the day, it was skipper Mushfiqur Rahim who won the toss as Bangladesh elected to bat first. They got a good dearth of spinners in their ranks with the likes of Mehdi Hasan, Taijul Islam to name a few. Australia also had both Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar in their playing XI.

The hosts didn’t have a great start. Opener Soumya Sarkar was dismissed in the second over of the game as Pat Cummins displayed his valour with the ball. Cummins continued to be ferocious with the ball as he had Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman back to the pavilion on consecutive deliveries. Bangladesh were left reeling at 10/3.

This is where the much-trusted duo of Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan came to the crease and played their part. Together, they stitched a partnership of 155 runs for the third wicket. While Tamim scored an improbable 71, Shakib also played a magnificent knock worth 84, missing out on a century.

The lower order inclusive of skipper Mushfiqur failed to do anything impressive as the spinners came into play. The Bangladesh innings was folded for 260 runs with Lyon and Agar both picking three wickets each. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell also managed to get a wicket.

However, if you thought that was all the drama for the day, you’ve been mistaken. Mehdi Hasan drew first blood as he had David Warner trapped in front of the stumps. Usman Khawaja was soon found short of his crease and later Shakib had nightwatchman Lyon back in the dressing room. Skipper Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw batted out to the last few balls to ensure there were no more casualties in the Australian innings as they were 18/3 at stumps on Day 1.
