Australia Women took a 1-0 lead over Bangladesh Women in the three-match ODI series as they beat them by 118 runs in the first ODI on Thursday, March 24 at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. After being put in to bat first, Australia posted a fighting score of 213/7 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Bangladesh were bundled out for 95 in 36 overs.
After Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and invited Australia to bat first, the visitors didn’t get off to a good start losing opener Phoebe Litchfield (0 off 1) in the second over itself. They further lost the big wicket of Ellyse Perry (2 off 10) in the sixth over leaving them on 21/2 after six overs.

Captain Alyssa Healy (24 off 39) also failed to convert her start while Tahlia McGrath also departed cheaply leaving Australia reeling at 48/4 after 18.2 overs. After four quick blows, Beth Mooney (25 off 64) and Ashleigh Gardner (32 off 38) played crucial knocks to help Australia cross the 100-run mark.
The duo also failed to convert their starts leaving Australia on 112/6 after 32.3 overs. A brilliant half-century from Annabel Sutherland (58* off 76) and a quick-fire knock of 46* (31) from Alana King helped Australia finish their innings on 213/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Sultana Khatun (2/42) and Nahida Akter (2/27) picked to wickets each for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh suffer a bizarre collapse in their chase
In reply, Bangladesh lost Fargana Hoque (0 off 2) and Murshida Khatun (10 off 24) early in the innings with 21 runs on the board after 7.2 overs. After two early blows, captain Nigar Sultana (27 off 64) and Shobhana Mostary (17 off 38) added 49 runs for the third wicket to stabilize the innings.

Their stand was broken by Alana King who destroyed Mostary’s stumps in the 18th over. Her dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse for the hosts as they went from 70/2 to 95 all out in 36 overs. As a result, Australia won the game by a massive margin of 118 runs. Ashleigh Gardner was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with figures of 2/26 in seven overs.
