One among the highly regarded opening batsmen in India’s next generation is Mangalore’s KL Rahul. An elegant right-hander who can keep wickets too, he was a part of India’s squad in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup after which, towards the end of that same year, he made his first-class debut.

The 25-year-old took quite some time to create a niche for himself in First Class cricket, but his breakthrough came in 2014 when he was instrumental in Karnataka lifting the Ranji Trophy, courtesy KL’s 1033 runs in the season. He also scored three nineties, three hundreds along with a match winning performance in the final.

That was the changing point of his career, after which he attracted several franchises at the Indian Premier League auctions. Sunrisers Hyderabad picked him for the 2014 season at Rs. 1 cr. His contributions with the bat weren’t very spectacular though. And in the 2015 auctions, he got picked by RCB to emerge as a great talent.

But Rahul’s forte lies in the longest format of the game. His application and technique impressed former veterans of Indian Cricket. He went on to become a Test regular for Team India, and in the recently conclude Border Gavaskar series, he made six fifties from seven innings. He was very instrumental in India regaining the trophy.

However, he also suffered a shoulder injury during India Vs Australia series, which ruled him out of initial few days of the IPL. Rahul has become such an important part of the RCB outfit, that many critics argue if Rahul was playing this season, RCB would not be languishing at the bottom of the table.

The 25-year-old has made many personal strides in his short career, and can rightly be called the future of Indian Cricket. Here is how Twitter is celebrating his birthday.
