Two new IPL teams from Pune and Rajkot to replace CSK, RR: The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council after its meeting in New Delhi announced the two new teams for the upcoming season of the league. The new franchises will represent Pune and Rajkot. Sanjeev Goenka made a successful bid for the Pune team while Rajkot franchise was sold to Intex. Both the new IPL franchises will forgo the revenues that franchises get from the IPL’s central revenue pool. Intex will pay 10 crores for Rajkot franchise while New Rising will pay 16 crores for Pune team. Every brand wanted to grab on its massive reach and popularity. The league’s relationship with its title sponsors has been rocky of late. After DLF washed its hands off the league, Pepsi stepped in and when the beverage giant put a stop to its association, Vivo came on board. Two franchises— Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) that have been a part of the league since the very first season were suspended for two seasons from IPL as per the verdict given by ‘The Honourable Supreme Court of India’ since their beneficiaries and owners were found guilty of involvement in betting. A list of corporates were in the fray to replace these two former franchises, but it was Rajkot and Pune who grabbed the honours. Sanjeev Goenka is the owner of the renowned RPG Sanjeev Goenka group and he had earlier expressed his interest in buying a team other than Kolkata as the city already has its own team the Kolkata Knight Riders that is co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan. Interestingly, Goenka is close to former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly as they co-own Atletico de Kolkata team in the Indian Super League (ISL).
