Plenty of cricket was played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Thursday and it saw some cracking contests between top sides. Maharashtra and Karnataka played out an absolute belter of a contest, while the games between Jammu & Kashmir – Madhya Pradesh and Hyderabad  – Andhra went down the wire as well.

Devdutt Paddikal, Manish Pandey and KL Rahul smashed half-centuries for Karnataka as they piled up a brilliant 312 runs batting first against Mumbai. Shivam Dube registered a scintillating hundred as Mumbai came very close to achieving their target, but fell nine runs short of their target.

Powered by the teenage sensation Tilak Verma’s fabulous knock in a rain-marred game, Hyderabad posted 171 runs batting first in their 20 overs. Batting was always going to be difficult on this track, but Andhra did look in a decent position at 125/3 in 16 overs. But the Hyderabadi death bowlers pulled the strings brilliantly towards the end and ensured they won the game by 7 runs.

Chhattisgarh stun Jharkhand in a low-scoring game

In a rather surprising outcome, Chhattisgarh surprised a much-stronger Jharkhand unit in their Group A & B fixture. Jharkhand got bowled out for just 119 runs batting first courtesy Veer Pratap Singh picking up a five-fer. The target was chased down in 28.3 overs, with Ashutosh Singh scoring a half-century for Chhattisgarh.

A stellar all-round performance from Yusuf Pathan remained the biggest talking point of the day. He smashed an 80-ball 83, which included 6 fours and 5 sixes and that allowed Baroda to put up 249 runs on the board. He also chipped in with a 3/33 with his off-breaks as Baroda restricted Maharashtra to 224 runs, winning the game by 25 runs.
