Former professional shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore was recently appointed as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He previously was appointed as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting. Rathore grabbed all the limelight after winning the silver medal in the 2004 Olympic games. Virat Kohli, who is currently engaged playing against the Australians in the Second ODI in Kolkata, took to Twitter to laud the initiative taken by Narendra Modi and Rajyavardhan Rathore to improve the standards of sports in India. “‘Khelo india’ a much awaited initiative by our hon’ble PM & SportsMinister.Surely this will catalyse sports in India.@narendramodi @Ra_THORe,” wrote Kohli in his Tweet prior to the match.

With the implementation of the scheme, this surely will be the watershed moment for Indian sports as the campaign aims to make sports as one of the tools for individual development, community development, economic development and national development which would strengthen India’s soft power.

Rathore, in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Health Minister JP Nadda at Shastri Bhavan, while addressing the media claimed that the decision to revamp Khelo India has been taken with twin goals: Sports For All and Sports For Excellence. According to a press release by PIB, the government will invest Rs 1,756 crore in the Khelo India scheme.
