VVS Laxman was one of the safest catchers the Indian team during his playing days. Be it slips or short-leg during his early career, Laxman was always there whenever a hard catch came his way. He was the one to take Wasim Akram’s catch during the 1999 Delhi Test, which earned Kumble his all 10 wickets in an innings, making him only the second bowler in history to do so.

Meanwhile, he has transitioned into a very good commentator and mentor for IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. More impressive thing is that he is part of the Star Sports’ Hindi commentary team for the ongoing Test series between India and South Africa. India meanwhile went 2-0 up in the series on the back of an innings and 137-run win over the Proteas in Pune.

VVS Laxman takes a blinder to get rid off Aakash Chopra

The Star Sports commentary team got together on the field before the start of the fourth day’s play in Pune and played a game of gully cricket. The game included Aakash Chopra, VVS Laxman, Jatin Sapru, Graeme Smith, Irfan Pathan, and others. Nikhil Chopra bowled to Aakash Chopra and the former India opener dabbed the ball towards the leg side.

VVS Laxman was stationed there and took the catch after it had bounced once. The game was being played with gully cricket rules. Irfan, VVS Laxman, and everyone were ecstatic with his catch, given that he is well in his 40s, but the reflexes were still as good as his playing days.

Even the former India batsman was surprised with his effort and exclaimed on Twitter, “Never knew one of my finest close-in catches would come in a full suit and not whites… Sunday morning cricket coming up on #Cricketlive 11.30 am @StarSportsIndia  Hindi”

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli’s 254* and Agarwal’s 108 helped India reach 601/5d. In reply, South Africa scored 275 in the first innings with Keshav Maharaj (72) and Vernon Philander (44*) showing resistance. Kohli bravely enforced the follow-on and his bowlers wrapped up the second innings for 189. Umesh Yadav picked up six wickets in the match to announce his return to Test cricket.

Wriddhiman Saha’s wicketkeeping was also praised a lot. He pouched some good catches down the leg side. And even his catch to dismiss Faf du Plessis was pure reflex and concentration on his part.
