As Windies is set to host India for a full-fledged series, the selectors named a strong side for the ODI format. Veteran cricketer Chris Gayle was granted his wish by the selectors to play this series. Earlier, Gayle announced that he’d retire from ODI cricket post the World Cup 2019. However, he made a u-turn and is all set to take the field in the 50-over format yet again.

Moreover, Chris Gayle has got a historic record in sight which he will be looking to break. The 39-year-old currently has got 10,393 runs under his belt in the ODI format. If he scores another 13 runs, he will go past Brian Lara’s tally of 10,405 runs and also become the leading ODI run-scorer for the Windies. Also, if he plays all the three games in the series, the Jamaican would finish with a total of 300 ODI games.

Jason Holder to continue as the skipper

Windies Cricket Board (WICB) has decided to continue with Jason Holder as the skipper of the side for this series. Furthermore, opener John Campbell, all-rounders Roston Chase and Keemo Paul returned to the Windies set-up. These three players were ignored for the World Cup 2019. Sunil Ambrose, Darren Bravo, Ashley Nurse, and Shannon Gabriel were sacked.

All these four players didn’t live up to the expectations in the quadrennial event. But, Campbell deserved the chance to come back into the team. Just before the World Cup, he scored 179 runs in a record-opening partnership with Shai Hope. But he didn’t play rest of that tri-series due to an injury.

Moreover, the selectors haven’t given an opportunity to Andre Russell in the side. The all-rounder was a part of the squad in the mega-event. However, mid-way through, he had to return back home due to an injury to his knee. Though, Russell has managed to find a spot in the T20I squad that was announced earlier. The first ODI between these two teams will be played on August 8.

West Indies ODI squad: Jason Holder (capt), Chris Gayle, John Campbell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Fabian Allen, Carlos Brathwaite, Keemo Paul, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, Kemar Roach.
