10 Players from other T20 Leagues who can lead IPL teams in 2022 season

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that two new teams are going to feature from the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). These two teams will most likely be from the Nothtren part of India, and history suggests that an Indian captain might be leading one of these franchises. But over the past 14 years of the IPL, we have seen teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals, and more recently, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) using foreign captains like David Warner, Shane Warne, and Eoin Morgan respectively. Warne and Warner have led the team to victories in 2008 and 2016. So foreign captains have had success in the IPL. With two new teams joining in the IPL 2022, the franchises can think of naming foreign players as a captain. We have seen few players chipping in and making an impact with their leadership. Also, few players have captaincy experience, and that might as well work to their advantage. With that, let’s take a look at- Players who can be a good fit while leading teams in the IPL 2022 season 1. Kieron Pollard Kieron Pollard. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Undoubtedly the biggest and one of the impactful foreign players in the IPL. Apart from his all-around utility skills, Pollard also has captaincy experience under his belt. Often he has stepped up when regular skipper Rohit Sharma misses out for Mumbai Indians (MI). During their last match against CSK too, the all-rounder was tasked with leading the side. Although MI lost the match, Pollard was more than decent with his captaincy. He is also the current limited-overs format skipper for West Indies and also the captain of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). So Pollard comes with immense captaincy experience and can be used as captains by MI or one of the other teams. In all likelihood, MI will retain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya in the auctions. They have the Right to Match (RTM) option, and they might as well retain Pollard. But if not, the West Indian all-rounder can surely play on another side and lead as well. 2. Nicholas Pooran Nicholas Pooran. (Photo Source: Twitter) Another West Indian comes on this list. The dashing batter Nicholas Pooran comes with captaincy credentials as he is the skipper of Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL. Also, Pooran is below 30 years of age, and that is one plus point when teams possibly look to hand over leadership responsibilities. But only one disadvantage with Pooran is that he does not boast of a good record in the IPL. During the first half of the league earlier this year, the southpaw failed to get going and registered four ducks for Punjab Kings. But yet the management persisted with him, and that shows how big a talent Pooran is. Also, for some captaincy might bring the best of them. For example, Warner and Gautam Gambhir prospered, and Pooran might as well prosper if he is handed the leadership reins. 3. Quinton de Kock Quinton de Kock. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The star South African player might have not had a great start to his captaincy career for his country but that doesn’t take anything away from his IPL record while batting for RCB, DC, and MI. A free-flowing batter, De Kock, was also pretty relaxed while leading South Africa for a brief while. MI might not retain him in the IPL auctions, and few teams like RCB, SRH, and KKR might as well like to have him in the team. De Kock is a utility player owing to his wicket-keeping abilities. Also, he provides the team with an aggressive option at the top. He can also bat in the middle-order. Although it’s very rare, he has done it in the shortest format. Whichever team De Kock plays with, he will surely provide with one thing or the other. The world is yet to see the South African wicketkeeper-batter’s full potential as captain, and what better opportunity than the IPL to start. 4. Moeen Ali Moeen Ali. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Call him lucky mascot, call him a gifted player or an elegant player, Moeen Ali is also a great captain for England in the County circuit. Recently, the southpaw led Birmingham Phoenix to the finals in the inaugural edition of The Hundred. Moeen’s leadership was lauded by all and also his handling of resources was spot on during the game. With MS Dhoni likely to end his IPL career, CSK can very well look out for a leader and can consider Ali as an option. Although Ruturaj Gaikwad’s name is circulating for the leadership role, once Dhoni steps aside, it would be wise to give the captaincy to Moeen, who has a fair bit of experience leading the side. Also, he is similar to Dhoni in many ways as he is calm and composed and quite an instinctive leader. So CSK might think of considering him for the pivotal role. 5. Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The enigma of IPL, Glenn Maxwell, has failed to live the tag of being the game-changer in the IPL at least. A lot was expected by him by the franchises like PBKS, DC, and MI but he failed to deliver the goods. But things slightly changed for Maxwell in the RCB. He was given a fixed role at number four, and so far, he has not disappointed the team. With Virat Kohli stepping down from captaincy for the team this season, the franchise can look to make Maxwell the captain of the team. Also, the team’s slogan of playing bold, as well as Maxwell’s style of play, resonate. He also has captaincy experience while leading Melbourne Stars in the BBL and that might prompt RCB in naming him the next leader. 6. Ben Stokes Ben Stokes. (Photo Source: Twitter) Talismanic England all-rounder Ben Stokes does not have so much captaincy experience, but he sure comes with the reputation of earning players trust and confidence. Stokes also handled a certain England B team well and won the ODI series against Pakistan. Clearly, it showed the responsibility brought the best of him. Although RR have announced Sanju Samson as the leader, in Stokes, they have an able backup. It remains to be seen if RR retains him during the IPL auctions. With Sanju Samson and Archer a certainty, the team might think of buying someone at a far lesser price. If that happens, then the remaining teams might target him during IPL 2022 auctions. 7. Travis Head has been the leader for Adelaide Strikers for two years now and has been doing a terrific job at it. An attacking player and a good maneuver of the ball, Head has surprisingly not got enough opportunities in the IPL. He has so far played only 10 matches in the IPL and scored 205 runs. But things might change with the inclusion of two new teams. Head offers a lot with his batting and also much more with his captaincy. Not only two new teams, but the likes of RCB, KKR, and RR might target him during the next auction. 8. Sam Billings Sam Billings. (Photo Source: Getty Images) A free stroking and fearless batter, Sam Billings can be a great leader owing to his easy-going and friendly nature. Billings has captaincy experience leading Kent in the County circuit and has a good record at it. Currently, he plays for DC in the IPL and previously he played for CSK. The opportunities have arrived at a snail’s pace for Billings. But a talented and handy player like Billings cannot be kept away from IPL for a long time. The IPL 2022 auctions might open new possibilities for him and also a possible shot at leadership. Billings also in several of his interviews has spoken about how he likes to lead the team as that brings the best of him. 10. James Vince James Vince. (Photo by Harry Trump/Getty Images) A player who has, by and large, frustrated and given joy due to the elegant style of play. James Vince is all that. He is more of Sanju Samson as he can enthrall you with stroke play or leave you shocked with his soft dismissals. But leadership in the Hundred and county circuit has added a new dimension to Vince. He has also tightened his technique and has been far more responsible in his approach. Although he doesn’t have IPL experience, he can likely get an IPL contract due to his attacking style of play. Add to that captaincy experience, and few teams might be tempted to buy him at a cheaper price and get the best out of this talented batter. 11. Liam Livingstone Liam Livingstone. (Photo Source: Twitter) A new entrant but not surely the last, Liam Livingstone is having a dream run for England. He scored the fastest hundred for the team off just 42 balls in a T20I match against Pakistan and solidified his reputation at the top. He was also named the MVP in The Hundred and also got an IPL contract for Rajasthan Royals. Livingstone is surely living the dream. Although he does not have captaincy experience, his exceptional form and X factor thing and can prompt teams in naming him the leader. The hard-hitting batter with extra responsibility on his shoulders might as well enjoy leadership as to how Warner did in the IPL.
