Shubman Gill has made some giant strides in domestic cricket for the past few years. This has also allowed him to knock at the doors of the Indian selectors. He broke into the Test team and instantly showed his class as a batsman in the top order. But, the Indian team is completely aware that Gill’s expertise lies in the white-ball set-up.

The young batter from Punjab had first shown his skills as a batsman in white-ball cricket itself when he was batting for India U19 during their journey to the 2018 World Cup win. Having sealed his spot in the Test team, Gill has also managed to impress the selectors enough to get him a place in the ODI squad as a back-up opener.

In the last ODI series in Australia, Gill played one match when the opener of the series Mayank Agarwal was left out of the final match. With Agarwal not around and Rahul being used in the middle order, the next obvious choice to replace Rohit has to be Shubman Gill. The right-handed batsman has 2313 runs at an average of 45.35 in List A cricket.
