Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers is extremely excited to be making a comeback to the cricket field during the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League. The franchise-based T20 tournament will be the first of its kind organized by South Africa, and see the best of the nations’ cricketers on a single platform. Overseas talent will also dazzle in the tournament – the likes of Chris Gayle, Rashid Khan and Eoin Morgan are some of the biggest T20 names that will feature in the month-long event.

AB de Villiers will be representing the Tshwane Spartans alongside the England skipper Morgan. His team also has South African internationals such as Lungi Ngidi, Dean Elgar and Theunis de Bruyn. 34-year-old, de Villiers admitted that he is still getting back into the swing of things, but also said that he is very much looking forward to the challenges that the sport offers him.

Speaking to Sport24, he said, “I am extremely excited. I haven’t played cricket for a while, but I am getting back into the swing of things. I have had these kinds of breaks before and it is always a challenge to get fit and hit balls again. I am really looking forward to that, and what will be a really good challenge in the Mzansi Super League.”

MSL a huge step for cricket in South Africa

About the Mzansi Super League, the batting legend termed it a ‘huge step’ in the development of South African cricket. CSA had prior issues in materializing a T20 league due to financial issues and lack of management. Since the inception of the IPL, several nations have begun their own T20 leagues, and South Africa have finally joined the club with the MSL. AB further stated that all the players would give their best to make the league a big success.

“It is a huge step in the right direction for Cricket South Africa, and South African cricket. As a unit, we’ll be looking to not just pull this tournament off, but make it a great spectacle for fans around the world to enjoy,” he added.

In May this year, the Proteas great had announced his retirement from international cricket, which came as a shock to the entire cricketing fraternity. Although rumours of him returning to international cricket prior to the World Cup had surfaced, they were put to rest by South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis. AB de Villiers is considered by many as the greatest batsman of his time, having finished his career with over 20,000 international runs and a whole bunch of records that will take some batting to break.

The Mzansi Super League is scheduled to kick off on November 16 with the final scheduled for December 16.
